looking through artnet.com at their pro and con John Currin articles, I must admit to two things. One, I was not aware that they fetch up to 400 K at auction and 200K straight from the studio (he is 41); and two, that i feel ridiculously envious- a dark, bitter feeling spreads over me. I'll admit to a third thing, I am generally depressed at the moment and this bitterness has everything to do with my state of mind, but the ultimate question behind both my current depression and John Currin's worth is, what and who makes sense out of the comlicated cultural landscape we inhabit and how. . . . the question of whether they deserve such phenomenal compensation for it is moot (i suppose). Can I satisfy my near-paranoid anxiety over this issue by conseding that the first question, as well, is moot? That to talk of anyone who makes sense of our world is to talk of what kept your interest today, and that no "unified" theory exists, in culture nor in stupid physics (my apologies to "superstring" people, but why would they vibrate in the first place, and then, at different frequencies). Danny M. "Kolaboy" on this channel makes pictures in all respects equal to Curin's, but I doubt they fetch that kind of bling. The difference. . . is in what your professor uses the euphemism "personal style" to describe. The euphemism stripped bare, is the much less flattering term "LOGO" or "brand". Kolaboy can no more compete with Currin than Nader with GW, than some local coffeshop with the Starbucks, and the arches. All those are some kickass, well thought out and welltimed brands. My path may well be in that direction, that is the direction of learning what it is that makes a good brand--- and reading Ray Croc's biography may or may not be a good start, but we'll get there. Art was my initial destination, but I have to admit I am not doing as stellar-ly as I somehow pictured myself doing when I was a child, and simply to try to follow in the footsteps of others has never been my way. Finding out exactly what it is that gives that kind of appeal and desirability and durability to certain manufactured realities is something I could feel proud in digging in, that is, if my depression doesn't keep me from getting off the proverbial couch.
