Dead-Imagination [2011-06-05 15:43:18 +0000 UTC]

Hello, lovely gallery btw.
May I ask, how did you get so good at drawing? I see your an illustrator, and I wonder what training did you have? Its just, I wish to do something art based when I leave school, and I'd like to know what kind of qualifications professional artists have.
I give you a llama in the hope of you answering my question =]

Hi Dead-Imagination! Thanks for the llama and watch ^_^

Will do my best to help! These will be brief and general, but if there's anything more specific I can help with just let me know! ^_^

Ok, well, the first question - getting good at drawing - is the simpler one I think! The most major thing there is simply practice. The more drawing you do, the better at it you get.

In terms of helping that practice along, I think drawing from life and challenging yourself do a world of good. Drawing from life gets you really looking at things so you learn how shadows affect things, how colours relate, so on and so forth - all stuff you can use when you draw from your imagination as well. Carrying a sketchbook around will also help make you vary what you draw and challenge yourself - since, of course, if you only ever drew one sort of thing (to use a common example, pretty girls with one particular kind of figure and face), you might get very good at drawing that particular thing, but you might not be good at drawing anything else! So draw lots, and draw everything! There are lots of great drawing books and resources out there - getting a few from the library might be a good start. Avoid ones that show you how to draw specific things and focus on ones that teach anatomy and drawing exercises and techniques instead.
Every drawing has a purpose! So when you make a sketch, don't worry about making a perfect final product. The practice and learning you got out of that sketch means the exercise had value regardless of how the final thing came out!
I've got a post on my blog with some tips on sketching while you're out and about here:
[link]

Hope that helps! Will get onto the study/qualifications bit in another reply!

Wow thanks for the help ^_^
I try to draw from life as much as possible, I draw things that are around me, but then I get bored because I draw the same things, because that's all we do in art GCSE lessons, just draw a vase, or a bug.. not very interesting. I would like to draw like real people, but there's nobody around me willing to let me draw them, and I feel weird to go into the middle of town to draw people..
But I will start to draw more in a few weeks (when my exams are over)and ill get some more books, (when I was younger I had drawing manga/anime books till I realised its more important to learn to draw properly before choosing a style(plus I never really got into anime/manga))
So yeah! Thanks for the tips, and ill definatly take them on board
And im about to look through your blog! So far it looks amazing XD

Sorry for being so slow!
It definitely sounds like you're on the right track! And to get into drawing random people, you could always start with people unlikely to notice anyway - people reading in a library or something.

Your second question re: education is a trickier one...I know working artists who studied something completely different, and I also know people doing illustration programs at uni...I did fine art, and then a general MA program where I did comics research/theory...so I haven't had much on the practical feedback side of illustration. But I enjoy the theory side of things, and all art study feeds into what you do, so I wouldn't say I regret my direction.

One thing to consider is if you want to have a backup to make sure of making a living...whether that be studying a bit of 3D software etc to augment the 2D to be employable in games, or graphic design to make yourself employable as an artworker, or a teaching degree...worth thinking about what area you might want to work in and then do some searches for job adverts in that field, and see what skills or training they commonly require. I think a lot of us creatives enjoy many things and it's hard to know where to focus your training. If there's anyone you can chat to like a career guidance counsellor or something (perhaps a local university's arts department would have someone more specialized in creative careers that you could talk to - they probably would as your a prospective student?) might help. But yeah, some job searches to get a sense of what roles are available could be a good start to thinking about what you want.
All the best! ^_^

Sorry for not replying for ages (ashamed face)
Wow, that's allot of information =]
at the moment for a level this September I'll be doing art graphics and IT, so I thought they would help me get closer to animation.. my school doesn't really offer a large variety, and there are not summer courses near to me or affordable enough to do..
I think in the long run I'll do games software and graphic design at uni, then perhaps do extra courses in art an illustration to get my skills up.
My nearest university is Bucks new Uni in High Wycombe, I'll check in a few minutes whether they do software or a good arts programme.
So far ive looked at job requirements for like uhhh EA, sony I think and a few others, just to see what they would need if I ever wanted a job there.. Im only just 16 so fortunately I have a lot of time to decide my options and look more into it..
Thanks so much for all you help!! probably the most useful information ive got from anybody, my careers counsellor was useless :L
Again, Thank you so so so much!

Oh yeah! Also worth checking www.sketchcrawl.com in case there are any groups in your area - other people who are also sketching can't mind if you sketch them!
