I usually use numbered pencils like HB and 3B for the skin, sometimes I use extra soft charcoal for the darker areas.
I just started drawing realistic after I took an art class last year when I had to draw a self-portrait (it was horrible).
I looked at your gallery but I'm kind of just starting out too, so I can't really give you any pointers or anything, sorry! But from my experience so far, I find that the contrast between light/dark makes things look more realistic, so maybe you could try to make much darker contours that offset lighter areas to give depth. Also don't give up! because that's what gets me through. Thanks again & good luck! :]

do u use stumps or like a tissue type fabric to smooth out the skin?
oh and i will try to control the contrast of my pictures a bit more thanks
OH AND MY SCANNER MAKES EVERY THING LIKE BRIGHTER THAN WHAT IT REALLY ISso that's annoying and not helpfull at all ha.

Oh yeah! I love using stumps to smooth out little detailed areas, but I use Q-tips for larger areas, I think they're wonderful haha :]
