i commissioned them a while ago, and they have been gone for almost a month

A month is nothing. There are people who never finish their art. They watched me early last month, so I have no idea what they do now or where they have been lately and I never commished them either. Check their journals and see if there is something being said about a hiatus, art block or whatever which states something about their doing, or try to note them and see if the note gets checked but unanswered, then you can see if they are active but ignoring.
I think when someone takes longer than a month it is too long but everything inbetween this time should be okay.
