Llama badges are a cult thing here on the page. They're completly useless (for the most part). Some members on the page loves to collect them, other users ignore them as best as possible. Me myself, they help me keep track of people I've been in touch with, since you can only give one llama/person. :3

Not really. It's a nice place with nice people (at least I've always been lucky). It's a bit hard to get noticed at first, due to the mass of deviations that are submitted every minute. But since they added groups, it's a lot easier to promote your stuff. Otherwise it's a lonely place, unless you're more interested in commenting on other people's work. Then you can get many great conversations. :3

If you use the page a lot, getting a premium membership can be really nice (to get rid of adds and get access to greater customization).

Yeah, my old friend who's been on DA for many years told me exactly the same. As for me, I'm still not sure what exactly do I want to do there and what I expect from DA. I've always been drawing and taking photos just for fun and hobby, nothing more. And I've always been interested in other people's art. So I decided to give DA a try.

Sounds like a good idea to just do some talking and meet some people. Then you can get a feel for what you want to do, whenever you want to do it. :3
A lot of people that comment regularly on my art and crafts never upload anything themselves and are here for the social part. They certainly make DA a nice place to socialize in.

Yeah, I guess you can find many kinds of users on this site. I think I'll probably upload some of my stuff by the end of the summer. Right now I'm too busy with enjoying the summer and traveling around.
