yea, i went to ringling. (graduated in 07)
cant say it was the greatest thing that happened to me, but i got what i needed from them.
i had idea you are a student currently.
i thought you were a pro.
still, damn...
you got what it takes.
dont let any of those snide "teachers" tell you otherwise.

who are your teachers?
if you dont mind me asking?

I transferred credits to Ringling as a 3rd year. Just finished and I am looking forward to my final year starting this August. Thank you for your encouragement.. sometimes I feel awkward because I know my girlish, digital art is rather different from what my other friends do.. but I am determined to continue
I have Hodges actually, and picked Hodges again next year. I am not certain if it is the best choice (I could not choose who I got on my 3rd year as I was a transfer), but I had good experiences with him so I thought I could go another year. I am starting to wish I got Dunnick though..!
I would appreciate and treasure all advice that you give me, if you are willing to do so!

HODGES!?
MIKE HODGES!?
he is my sworn enemy, that slumlord motherfucker tried to ruin me.
i HATE him.

he had something against me doing cartoons, and would insist that i should paint only.
when i pursued doing cartoon stuff, he would give me shit grades and would tell me to go back to painting.

next time you see him, tell him that ADAM LICHI still hates you.

in the begining the guy would always talk to me like a bitch, and i always tried to stay positive and upbeat. but he tried to run me into the ground constantly.
after a year it tiresome.
then i started to get snarky with him and he acts like he dosent deserve it.

as for dunnick, i cant say.
never had him as a teacher, but i know for a fact the guy is a spineless coward.

who cares if your style is "girly", i find it quite beautiful.
i love work that is such a far cry from my own.
it is refreshing.

that is what these ringling snobs never understood.
alot of these kids try to emulate the flavor of the week. (in my time it was James Jean)
so who ever was the best james jean clone would get all the attention and praise.
it got to the point where i cannot stand the real james jean actually art anymore.

my advice, is STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF.
and remember, that these kids are your competition and will try to ruin you when push comes to shove, ESPECIALLY TOWARDS THE END OF THE SENIOR YEAR.
always try to be one step ahead of them, and humor them.

as for your art, say; "THIS IS ME GODDAMMIT! I CHANGE FOR NO ONE! AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN GET THE FUCK OUT OF ART!"
(ofcourse stay openminded for actual helpful critisism and truly genuine constructional help)

make sure you know the difference between opinion and a valid critisism. it will save your life.
it is key.

i have an ocean of knowlege i can give you.
if you have anymore questions, just ask!

hope i was informative
-adam

Oh my! Actually I did hear alot of bad things about Hodges, and I have friends who despised him too, which scared me pretty badly during the first few days of orientation. However, in time, I find that he is quite kind to me and gives good critiques, and I seem to get away with not doing too much process (which he loves >< as long as I produce good work at the end. I am surprised he did not allow you to do cartoons.. I have classmates who do similar stuff and he allows it. Also.. I would think that your work is the kind that he really digs O_O!! Of course he does love paintings alot (as with the other Ringling teachers), but he seems to welcome the different styles that my classmates and I do, and doesn't mind that I keep my work digital. I have told him about my concerns with digital and traditional art (sometimes I feel that I am not taken seriously because of all the digital work) and he has been understanding all the while. Maybe he has changed now.. but I am indeed very sorry to hear that you have bad experiences with him. Which year did you get him though? I heard that he is very tough on 1st and 2nd years, and tend to be much more relaxed for 3rd and 4th years.
I don't know if I should send him your poisonous regards!! It would be very awkward!

I was very undecisive between Dunnick and Hodges for my final year. I heard Dunnick doesn't care what you do and the entire year is very free. I decided not to take a risk and go for Hodges. I feel kinda stupid now, to be honest.. Somehow, I did not think I would click with Pratt or Thiel, so I did not choose them.

James Jean is still the big thing! I heard someone paid $20-30? for a pen brand that James Jean supposedly uses. That's how big he is still.. I have a friend who used to love him but now dislikes his work because of all the fans. I think they're trying to get him to judge the Illest of Ill show this year too. I love him and all, but I would be fucked if he does In fact I think he would probably be mobbed if he came..

I must admit I'm very apprehensive regarding the final year. I have faltered alot in my 3rd year.. I'm too shy to talk to people and spent the year trying all types of stupid shit because I wanted to impress people who I don't have to impress and lost focus on what I want to do. I don't know if I can be one step ahead of my peers, but I know that I'm there to just improve myself, so that's what I'll do. I should probably write that down somewhere and paste it on my wall..
Was there really ruining that happened? Everyone I've met have been very nice and helpful! I know there will be some drama for the senior show (there always is for these kind of events) but I would not expect under the belt tactics. Besides.. what can they do?

Thank you very much for your kind words and help, I truly appreciate it! I would like to ask for survival tips regarding the final year, I know it is important to try out for the Illest and Best of Ringling shows, and frequent interviews offered by the Career Services.. but how about a thesis? Is there anything particular that I should know for it? I am thinking of doing a series of paintings for my thesis What did you do for yours?

if you dont wana give hodge's my regards, i understand.
if he were to find out that you are associated with me, he might turn on you.
he's just that kind of guy.

i had hodges for my junior and senior year of ringling.
as for your "peers" there is alot they can do.

take me for instance, there was someone who gave hodges the notion i had plagarized my designs for my thesis from an outside source.
when i demanded to know who my accusers were, hodges was the first guy to defend their anoniminty.
long story short i was able too prove my innocence and artistic merit. i proved to them that my thesis was not the work of plagarism. but the damage had already been done, word got out that i was involved in the scandal, making things very difficult for me.
bastards almost destroyed my ability to live.

(you can see some of my thesis here on this site, its all the "wellsville" material)

the only advice i can give for your thesis, is to try to keep it secret. keep it safe.

as for the james jean fans, im not suprised.
really, is he THAT good of an artist?
frankly in still don't understand the appeal.

but then again, he's the one who's worth thousands of dollars, and here i am doing indie comiczines and product logos for food.

i dunno, maybe i should steal his style too.
maybe ill be worth a damn.

i always thought jon foster was the better artist.
(he was accused of plagarizing james jean ironically)

keep what you are doing, it seems to work fine for you.

oh ad one more thing, i know you think im a great painter, but you wana know something?
i never made it into any of the best of ringling shows, or illest. not once.
it makes me feel good to know that as young and as talented you are, and the fact that you will most likely make it (judging by your work alone) i feel awesome that you admire my work.

thanks.

Whoa, the whole plagiarism accusation really sucks. Really a blow to a student artist to take.. I'm glad the truth was found out but again, that really is very shitty. I hope the person who accused you receive the just karma.. noone should fling shit like that without proof, esp in art since everything is so ambiguous. I hope that experience made you stronger though, if anything.

Keep the thesis a secret? o_O Are you sure? I thought we're supposed to ask for opinions and thoughts about it. How was your final year with Hodges (drama aside DX) like? Did he still give those assignments and things, were there ample time for work?

I can see the appeal in James Jean. He has a very fluid style, and is ever-changing and is so very eyecatching XD However to be honest, I don't find him to be the BEST EVAR. He's this one cool guy.. but there are lots of other cool guys out there. Anyway, you have to give him props to remain so relevant to art students for so long. It's just unfortunate that many persevere to be mini JJs. But not all !

Jon Foster (I love him! I think he came to judge Illest of Ill last year. I was so pissed I did not join) is one of my favs. I can't believe people think he plagarized JJ? O_o They're both so different and cool in their own way.

You should know that I did not make it to Best of Ringling or Illest of Ill either . I will try again this year, but I am not putting much hopes to it. I am frankly very surprised that your work did not get picked. I would think that these: [link] / [link] / [link] would fit in so well.

I wish I had the same confidence as you have in me, but I also feel great that you admire my work! Let's just be positive then and progress as we can!

i was able to manage my partime job at gamestop and do my thesis together, so time was pretty fair considering i made storyboards, character turnsheets, environment designs, facial expressions as well as a crude animatic.

as for my advice for keeping your thesis a secret, it's only a suggestion, you dont really have to follow it, but with my hindsight, if i had to do it again, i would have kept a low profile. really, it's up to you.
all it is, is a precaution. after all, i might have had a better chance at cartoon network if it weren't for that horrendous scandal.

overall, my final year i was extremely on the edge.
understand that i lived alone off-campus by only 1 mile, for almost 5 years.
being alone for 5 years was just more fuel to my akwardness.
there was alot of screaming (my voice is still gravely to this day), and alot of mirrors broken.(got the scarred knuckles to prove it)

obviously it didn't go too smoothly.
but that's just me though.
i was just an exception.

i doubt your experience will be like mine.
anyway, as for the pieces you mentioned that i did.
thing is, those didn't exist yet at the time.
(although i did submit them to "spectrum", im sure you know about it.)
never made it into spectrum, rejection city.

im sure you have noticed by now that i am a frustrated guy.
i feel like im just below the level it takes to be a "somebody", you get me?
any way thanks for hearing me out, i feel a bit better venting out this frustration.

luciole In reply to the-invisible-fist [2008-07-10 19:29:48 +0000 UTC]

I will keep my thesis idea low profile I have no intentions of screaming it to the world.. I understand now.
I'm sure there are other avenues besides CN. Keep persevering!! You shouldn't let that scandal get to you D:

There is alot of tension to live alone, I understand. I came alone to the US and had to adapt very quickly, my first few months were awkward as there was alot of culture shock to go through. I am still not entirely comfortable but I am thankful to live on campus. I can't imagine how it would be to live alone, but hey.. I hope you're better now. And anyway campus housing cost a shit load.

Please don't feel bad about rejections to Spectrum. That thing is very very difficult to get to and I don't expect one to get in it without a handful of rejections! There is alot of hardship one must go through first, esp artists, after all we're both still very young in comparison (fresh grads!) and there is much to learn. It would be nice to be a 'somebody', everyone wants that, but truthfully it is better on the heart to settle to be satisfied with our progress. There is plenty of time to improve what we do and we should concentrate on establishing ourselves by our own pace as we can. Just keep moving, thats the ticket!

see his picture gozu, then you will know HE IS A PHOTOGRAPHER.
no one can set up shots like he did in that picture, the framing, the composition, all sublime.
it is unsurpassable, and i say this with absolute confidence.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JanaStormraven In reply to the-invisible-fist [2008-07-06 14:27:08 +0000 UTC]

Ah Gozu, a vivid film.
In that respect then yes I suppose. Is he the cinematographer on the film? They've often got a lot to do with the set-up of scenes too. (I was sad and did an imdb.com check, and he's not). But your statement is pretty true, he has an eye for it. I need to watch Visitor Q again sometime.

I'm not sure I'd go with unsurpassable, but he sure is good.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

the-invisible-fist In reply to JanaStormraven [2008-07-06 14:47:49 +0000 UTC]

he's not the cinematographer, but it is consistant with all his films.
it is not uncommon for him to be a cinmetographer tho.
much like robert rodriguez, he has his hands in all the soups when he makes his films, probably cuz it's more cost effective for him to have multiple jobs as a filmmaker to keeps his films under budget.
so i have no doubt that he had control over every shot in that film, as well as his others.
regardless if he was a "hired cinematograoher" or not.
it's in his idiom.

JanaStormraven In reply to the-invisible-fist [2008-07-06 15:04:26 +0000 UTC]

I think he has a clever eye for how to shoot a scene, to capture a shot, that adds to the bizarre nature of his films, certainly. I'm not putting him down in any way, don't get me wrong there! I just to like make sure I'm not giving a director too much credit without appreciating the creativity of the team he works with (cinematographer, screenwriter, etc).
Takashi Miike definitely ranks high however.
