Sure, I wanted to be a mangaka initially as a way to show off to my friends that I could draw. My dad used to be a craftsman, and he designed landscape scenery for companies and shopping malls. I still remembered how amazingly detailed his works were even till now. He was the first person who influenced me to pick up a pencil and draw.
Manga has been a huge influence in my life and I still remembered the first manga I picked up was Dengeki Pikachu vol 1, back in 1998, and a friend had brought it to school and he lent me the book. The first manga I bought with my own pocket money was Neon Genesis Evangelion, vol 6, in 2002, and it totally exposed me to a whole different world that made me who I am today. NGE's style, done by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (the character designer for Gainax) was the first manga style I adopted, and after that I got to know Tenjou Tenge and the artist Ito Ogure (better known as Oh! Great, also the artist of Air Gear) in 2003. NGE and Tenjou Tenge became my strongest manga influence back then, and they still are now. What about you? What inspired you to become a mangaka?

Well I've only been drawing manga for about a year and a half (I'm not totally sure because I didn't date my older drawings) and I first found out about it when I was chosen along with some other people in my class in school to go to an Art club at lunchtimes. It seemed interesting so I went but all the teacher did was give us a booklet with some instructions for things like eyes, head shape etc. It got kind of boring and a few weeks later I joined keyboard club at lunchtimes instead of art club because I had started learning piano (I'm going to do my Grade 2 exam soon). Anyways I lost interest in manga until a few weeks later one of my friends brought his sketchbook into school and he showed us a page where he drew manga eyes. At the top it said Sailor Moon so I asked him and he said the manga eyes were from an anime he had watched called Sailor Moon. After that day I started watching Sailor Moon but when I started the second season the episodes became really boring and repetetive ( a new villian would show up and then get defeated by Sailor Moon and the others. That was the only thing happening) so I stopped watching it. I started getting into drawing realistically so I was watching videos on Youtube and I found one by Mark Crilley. That made me go into manga again because he had many manga tutorials on his channel (he had published a manga series aswell) and from then on I drew manga. I thought I was good but one day I saw my little sister on deviatArt looking at random things (at that time I didn't know what deviantArt was) and I saw the website had a manga/anime section. When I went on my laptop I started looking at drawings on deviantArt and my drawings looked terrible compared to the ones on dA lol xD The first time I started getting a bit better is when my friend started reading Naruto (her uncle had about 20 volumes) and she started lending them to me. It had a huge impact because I had never read any manga before. Also I think Clannad was the first anime I watched from then on I started watching loads of animes online. The first manga series I have ever owned is Death Note ( I didn't have any moneu of my own so my Dad bought it for me )because I loved the anime. When I read Death Note I started working harder on my drawings to make them better since the drawing in Death Note were amazing. The thing that had the most influence on me is dA and all the amazings artists who use it. I started improving so much when I made an account and I saw other peoples work, read tutorials etc. Before dA I didn't even attempt anatomy; all I drew was faces and any attempt at a body failed. Now I can at least draw a reasonable body I couldn't even draw folds in clothes xD I think I first wanted to be a manga-ka after reading Naruto because I loved how you could tell such an interesting story using only panels, drawings and speech

i see.. Wow cool you learn piano? Sailormoon is a classic, lolz.
Sure I know Mark Crilley, he's like one of the most famous manga artist on youtube and one of the more successful ones in the manga industry in the US, I think? I heard he was nominated for an Eisner Award, which was pretty awesome.
Lolz! Everyone who visits dA the first time gets overwhelmed by all the talent. I do believe a lot of artists here in dA have inspired me as well to draw even better, and it just creates a good feeling and level of competition.
Clannad! Wow, you watched that anime? That is the most saddest anime I have ever watched!! Aaargh! Now I have the urge to watch it again. I've watched the entire series, both Clannad and Afterstory about 4-5 times and I still cried every time, lolz. It's an amazing show.
Cool! Yeah, Death Note has great inking style, and the story is very interesting. Bakuman from the same artist is also pretty awesome. It was the manga that gave me back the fire to continue doing what I love. Its a pity the series have ended as well.. T_T
I think it all takes constant practice and some time for skills to mature. I usually draw over and over again when I wanted to practice a particular hairstyle or perspective in my sketchbook. Backgrounds are a bit tougher though, they're a pain to draw constantly, lolz. Now my main priority is to practice my inking and dynamic perspectives, coz I'll be drawing a lot of battles in my manga.
Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Bakuman, I think anybody would want to be a mangaka after reading any of these titles. Yeah, that's whats so special about manga/comics. They're sort of like a hybrid between a novel and a movie. You tell the story in words, but show what is going on in sequence through panels. The proper term for it is sequential art, and I do agree with you. Drawing manga is really awesome.

So you know on your latest artwork (The Mannequin Waltz:Revival) it says you use nib pens so are they good? Do you have the ones were you dip them into bottles and if you do do you think they are better than just normal inking pens (ones that don't have g nibs, maru nibs etc.)? I was thinking of getting nib pens but I wasn't sure if they were that great so I would like to hear your opinion
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
theshazerin In reply to SugarySweetLove [2012-08-18 18:04:31 +0000 UTC]
Actually nib pens need a lot of care and maintenance, and you also have to buy the suitable type of ink and paper that's specifically for manga/comics. It's basically what professional mangaka use. Personally I believe that the maru, kabura and school nibs work as effectively as pigma/normal pens that have, say, 0.3 or 0.05 thickness. The most significant nib pen in the manga industry is the G-pen, as it is the nib that has the most flexibility in drawing dynamic lines. Most professional manga-ka use the G-pen and the characters in Death Note, Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, or any other popular manga are drawn using the G-pen. Its an essential tool, but the G-pen is among the most difficult to master. It took me several months to get used to drawing with the G-pen, but once you get used to it you won't look back, lolz.
For pigmas/normal pens, it's much cheaper and there's less maintenance to worry about compared to nibs, (worrying about the nibs rusting, washing away the ink carefully so it doesn't wear off, applying proper pressure so the nib wont wear out so quickly, also worrying about whether the ink has gone bad or run out of inking paper). But with pigmas, you only get to draw a very monotonous line, which is good when drawing background or technical stuff, but its not enough to create an impact when drawing characters.
I seriously think its personal reference, whether or not you use nibs or pigmas/normal pens. Mark Crilley doesn't use nibs, he just uses pigmas and he could still create a manga that became successful. Ultimately the tools are just there to help the artist better express themselves.
Before using a nib, most people burn the tip of the nib slightly to melt off the protective oil so it can start retaining ink, but for me I just wipe it off with a cloth, and it still works just as well. Hope that helps a bit.
Oh, you can pen nibs, manga paper and ink at akadot.com i think, but I personally buy my supplies in deletermangashop.com.

I already have some sakura pigma inking pens and I agree that it is very monotonous. Also for some strange reason some of the ones I bought ran out very quickly. Anyways I think I'll try nib pens even if they are a bit more dificult
I've seen deletermangashop.com before So what do you normally buy from it? Also can you tell me what supplies you have (like nibs, pens, paper etc.)? Right now I only have some sakura pigma pens, prismacolor coloring pencils (I have the manga set so it came with only 23 colors) and a sketchbook and I want to get some more stuff but I would like to have your opinion on what supplies I should get to draw manga and from where

Well I've recently been trying sakura microns, I think they're pretty okay, but I still preferred my copic multiliners coz they have thinner tips.
Cool! I suggest getting deleter starter pen set, that includes the nib holder, a G-nib, maru-nib and saji-nib. Get a feel of which nib you feel most comfortable using. You wont find much problems with maru and saji, but G-pen will be a bit tricky to use.
For myself, I use a variety of tools to ink my stuff, I'll be posting a photo of all the tools I use soon so people might see.
But basically I use G-pen and maru-pen for main lines, like the characters and such. I use a pentel permanent marker for filling in the beta, and also a brush pen for the hair. For the brush pen I'm not sure of the brand, but it says 'NR-920-W' and made in Japan. For the panels I use a sakura micron 0.8mm tip. Backgrounds, I use sakura microns 0.35 and 0.2mm tips and copic multiliner 0.05mm tip.
For the ink I use deleter black 4 and deleter white 2, coz they're compatible with color and I draw my finished manuscripts on B4 deleter paper, 135kg (Type-A).
I prefer, and usually, buy in bulk. Especially when I run low of manuscript paper(the deleter Type-A paper), I buy around 200-400 sheets at one time. For doing my drafts and storyboards, I use normal printer paper most of the time, the kind you can buy for $5 for 500 sheets of paper. Or I draw them in my sketchbooks. Its more cost efficient.
I plan to switch to sumi ink once I've finished my second bottle of deleter black 4 ink, and really want to switch to using deleter Type-C paper but its too expensive.
Oh, I think I forgot to mention, for initial sketches/storyboards/layouts I use a 0.3mm mech pencil, and a 2mm lead holder. Also for doing the tones I usually scan them and do them digitally in manga studio ex4. I also have an a3 printer+scanner(which cost me a sum of money) to scan the works done in b4 paper coz normal scanners are limited to only a4 size.
Yeah, I think that covers up what I mainly use to make manga. Colors I mainly do it digitally coz I only have like, 7-8 copic markers and half of them had run out of ink lolz and they're too expensive for me right now. I either color in Manga Studio, Photoshop or Painter, depending on the type of illustration and also depend on my mood, lolz. If I'm lazy I'll just color in Photoshop.
Some of the manga supplies I have I found out through a lot of research and searching on the internet, and I'm still searching through online for different kinds of manga supplies that I could get that are cheaper and better, as well as more sites that are more accessible and are available to ship to my country.
Hope that helps.

Oh by the way I know this is comment is really late but when you say beta do you mean the drafts? And if it is for the drafts then what do you use to fill in big spaces of black in your pages?

Beta means the areas where you just fill with black ink. Usually large areas of shadow, or if the hair/clothes of the character was black/dark-colored).
Hey man, I really, really apologize for not being able to get back to you earlier. I've been so busy with my new job and I'm wrapped up in a lot of stuff in my life right now and because of that, even though I really, really want to chat with you more, but it will be quite hard in the coming months. Thank you so much! By the way before I forgot to mention I had a light box as well lol xD
Anyways so I have a few questions, feel free not to answer lol
So what's the difference between the different black inks and why did you specifically choose black ink 4 , what's the difference between white ink 1 and 2 and why did you choose white ink 2 , what's the difference between different types of manuscript paper (type a, b, c etc.) and why do you use b4 instead of a4. I think those are all of my questions for now xD
By the way the brush pen you mentioned that had NR-920-W, I searched it up and I found something called the twin brush pen NR-920W. Is that the someone that you have?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
theshazerin In reply to SugarySweetLove [2012-08-24 12:32:40 +0000 UTC]
Your welcome! Awesome, you got a light box. That's way out of my budget for now, but if I had one I wouldn't need to redraw so many times to ink my stuff, lol.
Well, if you look up the deleter website, they have a chart which showed the difference between the black inks. I chose 4 specifically coz it has the darkest shade of black. Ink 4 is also waterproof, which is pretty useful if you wanna use colors over the inked drawing. I honestly haven't tried the others, so I cant really tell you the difference first hand, but this [link] might help. The first bottle of ink I tried was the Windsor and Newton black ink, but it sucked big time coz the shade of black is very weak, and when the ink dries in tends to go dark grayish. I'm trying sumi ink, as well as pilot drafting ink, coz I'm still experimenting what types of inks could be comfortable to use for myself, so once I've decided I'll buy that particular brand of ink in bulk again.
For white 1 and 2, I picked white 2 coz it was thicker, and I don't really use whiteout from the bottle, instead dip out a bit ad mix it with a little bit of water and its basically the same as white 1. So actually buying white 2 is more cheaper and more cost effective.
For difference in deleter manuscript paper, you can check out this [link] I mainly use Type A paper coz it has the beginner standard manuscript format that professional manga-ka use when submitting to their editor and publisher. Type C is the actual 'professional standard' used in the Japanese manga industry, but its more expensive. I also buy Type B paper, which is plain paper without any grids, so i can draw illustrations on them.
Yes! That is the brush pen I'm talking about! I bought it at my local stationary store and its really good! I've kept using the same brand since.

Oh so you use type B paper for illustrations? Is that what you used for your illustration The Mannequin Waltz: Revival?

Lol, at the time when I was drawing the Revival cover, I only had Type A paper, and it was a pain learning how to remove the blue lines in photoshop, but after that it was pretty much smooth sailing.
I had some Japanese lessons, and I can speak basic Japanese and read basic katakana and hiragana, but kanji is still impossible. I had some Japanese friends some years ago who helped me with my conversation skills, but we've pretty much lost contact after high school, and nowadays I basically try to 'pick up' the language while watching anime i guess, lolz.

I just finished reading the final chapters of Air Gear and Bakuman a few days ago, and right now I'm reading mainly Beelzebub, Medaka Box, Eden no Ori and Denpa Kyoushi. Beelzebub coz of the humor, Medaka Box because of the story and I'm also a fan of Bakemonogatari, the creator's previous work, Eden no Ori coz its a very interesting horror manga, and Denpa Kyoushi coz its funny and its an otaku-related manga.

(Sorry I totally forgot their names, lolz) But OHSHC anime is one of the best romcom anime I ever saw, lolz. Very hilarious and the characters are very loveable too. Code Geass was originally made as an anime with CLAMP as the character designers, it was only after the anime finished airing, that manga adaptations were published featuring side stories from the main plot. The anime was good!

Pandora Hearts has loads of unexpected twists that keep the story exciting but it also has funny scenes Thereis one huge twist as well which COMPLETELY changes your persepective on the stroy. I really recommend that you watch the anime first (it only goes up to chapter 33 but the soundtrack is amazing and there is a melody in the story that is really important so it would be nice to know what it sounds like) and when you finish it start reading the manga There are 76 chapters so far.

Both the manga and the anime were top notch and the story is so innocent and heartwarming. I love and very much appreciate shoujo and I do read shoujo manga, but as a guy I prefer more action, lol.
I wish you luck on your dream.
