A tip to paint wood? Use lots and lots of references!! If you know how wood is supposed to look, then mimicking it isn't too hard. This is how I paint:
I use acrylic paints and small bushes. And then I mix, mix, mix! the paint to make the wood color that I want. I typically use red, purple, copper, and yellow orange paints to make the wood color.
I have a bright metallic red and copper that I like to use instead of regular red and brown to make the wood appear shiny.
I then lay down a flat wood color on the section that I want, being careful to make all of my brush strokes going evenly in one direction. It gives the illusion of wood grain when I'm finished, so I try to be as straight as possible.
When I'm almost done, I'll dip half of my brush in a deep purple color, and then carefully apply to the area, following my "wood grain" strokes. Don't put too much purple on at this stage, though. I just want a hint of wood grain.
Finally, I add the details. I'll brush on straight deep purple to make a more pronounced wood grain, often painting in "c" shapes like you see in natural wood. I also take a little yellow-orange to use as hightlights around the grain.
