Hey there! Dunno if you remember me but we used to be part of an RP group on here years and years ago. I haven't been around for awhile and decided to come back, feeling nostalgic. I hope you've been well!

Hahahaha, right? When I do actual commissions it takes me so long. I don't know why. I'll draw the sketch and start laughing at how hideous it looks XDΒ

EUGH Sketches always look terrible to me. Sometimes, I feel like my art looks better with the sketch lines, ink lines and not colored XD Especially digitally.

Thanks again for the tip with the white make-up!
I'll just try it asap, looks like you get a loooot of applications from one container
Oh okay, I understand.... sewing stretchable seams is always a challenge, since with straight seams the thread will rip, but zig-zag ones will be visible on the outside - unless you stretch the material a LOT while sewing. If it's just one seam though, you could try stitching the two layers, fold the seam allowance up or down (kinda like the seams many jeans or leather clothes have) and sew those three layers close to the fold with a zig-zag stitch. Would be flexible and look neat ^^

You're welcome! ^^ Always happy to share and swap ideas. It's all about learning, right, and figuring out what works for you?
I'm not quite sure what you mean about the kinda like jeans-seam O_O I'd have to see it. If you mean french-seam, dear god, that took me about an hour and another person to help me figure out how the heck it's done. But that seam is sooooo nice~
I think there is one straight stitch that does work for stretch fabrics... I'll have to look through my book again x.x

Yes exactly, so happy you see it the same way -Β I love exchange with other people and seeing how everyone does stuff differently, that's always a great opportunity to learn something new that'll help for sure, one way or the other
Like this, but with a zig-zag seam instead of two parallel straight ones ^^

Just looked up the french seam, seems to be pretty much the same - being a "it only has to be nice on the outside" kind of cosplayer, I wouldn't have done it exactly like that, but simply stitch the two layers together so they don't shift, fold up the seam allowance and sew it in place from the outside with the zig-zag, then remove the stitching thread.
Okay, good luck finding it!

Wait.. what.. I've read that like three times now and I think you just explained a way to make zig-zags straight or work stretchy? @_@ So confused.
I hemmed some shorts earlier and the straight stitch I used ended up making them all baggy.. Apparently the shorts have a stretch in them so I have to rip the stitches out and do a zig-zag or something but I don't want that to be seen on the outside *sobs*

kritzelkatze In reply to watashiveracasan [2014-06-02 17:23:40 +0000 UTC]
...I'm not sure anymore how we got to the zig-zag french-ish seam, but it would be a stretchy seam with the fabric ends hidden on the inside.
Hmm you could try using a strip of rather thin iron-on interfacing to make the fabric stiff where the hem's gonna be? This way, you could use a straight stitch without it becoming baggy
