-Hikiki was most certainly not expecting to be slammed into upon rounding the corner from the direction of the men's quarters and expected even less the perpetrator to be...a stranger? And a very strange-looking one at that (not that he had the right to judge). Had this been a member of the crew he likely would've simply brushed the ordeal off as an accident, but no, he did not know this person and thus had little intention of letting her get off scot free. Never mind the fact she was on their ship...
His voice remained as smooth as ever as he crossed his arms and cocked his head in a questioning manner, snide grin in place as always.-
Well, well, well. And just who are you supposed to be?

*Most of the noise of the usually busy ship is somewhat dampened by a thick layer of frozen water in the shapes of tiny little flakes. And the huntress makes good use of this as it silences her footsteps quite well. Closer... closer... And suddenly a snowball is flying through the air, the sender a certain lionfish hybrid, and the receiver... well, who else would it be addressed to but the resident moorish idol?*
Think fast!

-Thinking fast is Hikiki's specialty, but all the thinking in the world won't prevent him from receiving a high-velocity clump of snow to the face when he predictably turns at Venini's "warning" cry. Especially not when said idol was up until that point preoccupied with trying to saw off the icicles accumulating on the railings.
He is less than amused by the lionfish's antics, but seeing that the perpetrator is none other than Venini simply encourages him more to pay her back tenfold shortly. For now though he'll take the high road and just wipe the snow off his face.-
Oh, what's this? Venini throwing a snowball? Now I've seen everything!

It's a wonder you'd be able to see anything with those reflexes...
*She keeps a sort of half smile half smirk on her face as she speaks though, and reaches down to scoop up another handful of snow that is formed into a snowball in an almost thoughtful way, and that she then proceeds to toss idly from hand to hand, making no secret of her intentions.*
And it's a good enough way to test your agility, don't you think?
*Of course that is not her true reason, but it would need to snow a good deal more before she admits that she is doing something so juvenile for the fun of it.*

Give me a break, how could I have ever guessed that you of all people would stoop so low as to initiate a snowball fight...
-He regards her coolly, leaning against the railing with one arm and a smug tilt of the head.-

*Curses! Her plan had been exposed so quickly and so easily? Well, perhaps she should have been expecting that seeing as her opponent of choice was Hikiki of all people. But to back out now would only ensure his victory rather than her own.*
Perhaps, but the ends will have to justify the means, childish as they might seem. What I wonder though, would you fight back or make the battle completely one-sided?
π: 0 β©: 1
worstmate-hikiki In reply to Toxinmaster-Venini [2011-01-07 06:01:43 +0000 UTC]
-Now normally he wouldn't dream of calling a snowball fight childish - when else could you get clean away with throwing things at people? - but Hikiki could never pass up an opportunity to take a dig at Venini when one presented itself!-
Come on now, do you really think I'd give you the satisfaction of seeing me turn tail at the threat of a little cold?
-Without making a big show of it (though the act itself is hard to hide when your opponent is justifiably suspicious of you) the Moorish idol brushes the snow on the railing into a small pile with his finger tips, eying Venini all the while. Indeed his intent is about as concealed as her tossing the snowball back and forth between her hands, and he suspects that she probably knows it.-
I think the real question here is, how many times will I nail you in the back before you give up?

*She doesn't try to conceal the turn of her lips as he seems to have accepted her challenge, good enough, for as satisfying as it might have been, surely just pelting him from a distance would have grown stale in the long run, not that she won't be doing that anyway, but now there's more variety added to the mix.*
Wishful thinking, Hikiki, when I'm done with you, you'll be so white that you actually do blend in with your surroundings!
*And there goes the snowball, with little warning perhaps, but since he has ammunition of his own, surely it's alright to start?*

worstmate-hikiki In reply to Toxinmaster-Venini [2011-01-07 06:47:13 +0000 UTC]
Haha! Touche, but I wouldn't want to make you jealous.
-He saw that opening assault of hers coming a mile away, but his retaliation would be just as predictable. A little hasty footwork carries Hikiki backwards along the side out of the path of the incoming snowball as he collects more material from his handhold along the way. Without giving her time to forge herself another icy shell he hurls his snowball at the lionfish and immediately spins on his heel to firmly grip the bare (if freezing) railing. A preparatory bounce is all he needs to flip his leg up and over then let his feet drop to the deck on the opposite side of the balustrade. The beginnings of a suicidal move for a human, perhaps, but his intent isn't to dive into the water below anyway.
Hikiki pauses just long enough to give Venini a two-fingered salute and a quick one-liner.-
Better work your white now, sister!
-Years aboard the Devil's Wrath and a natural eye for detail - along with a little luck - allow the bumblebee to pull off this daring maneuver somewhat successfully. How many paces apart were the cannons below deck? How about portholes? Relative to his previous position? By Hikiki's calculation he was perched directly over one of the many round windows lining the sides of the ship; he would leave it up to fate as to whether or not he caught one on his way down. No sooner had he flashed that prize-winning smile to his opponent than he had let go of the rail and stepped backwards off the deck.
Figuring it would slow his descent Hikiki plunges his knife into the ice-covered wood and though he will almost definitely be blamed for that hideous scar he'll produce, it'll be a small price to pay for getting the jump on Venini! Far from elegantly but still with success he catches the bottom edge of the porthole and, while he probably dislodged something important in coming to such a sudden stop, he nevertheless sucks it up and with knife in teeth, hauls himself inside the ship...-

*Indeed his return of fire is foreseeable, and the lionfish has little problems with diving out of the way with a duck and roll that would make many an infiltrator proud. Though when she has time to look back at Hikiki again, it's a bit of a startling scene to see him disappear over the railing. That fool! Doesn't he know that the water is freezing cold and they don't need a bumblebee with pneumonia now?! (Not that she would be worried, of course.)*
You idiot!
*She rushes to the railing in what she already knows is a futile attempt to grab and haul his sorry tail back onboard, and not a moment later than Hikiki has safely disappeared does the reach the railing, only to find a strange emptiness and relatively calm waters greeting her sight. A frown of confusion crosses her face, as she's not familiar enough with the possible escape routes to think of the opening a good bit down. And even if it were to cross her mind, it would still strike her as unlikely that he would be able to pull off such a stunt.*
What in the world...?

worstmate-hikiki In reply to Toxinmaster-Venini [2011-01-08 00:35:08 +0000 UTC]
-Now that he has the element of surprise on his side Hikiki takes his time creeping past the cannons and flickering lanterns towards the staircase that would take him above deck. Part of the reason is of course to keep the level of noise to a minimum, even on a different level from the ever-alert Venini, and the other part is to allow his aching wrist time to shake off the pain before it's put to use again. (Fortunately it was not his dominant right hand that had suffered the strain of so much dead weight yanking on it.)
His footfalls come ever slower as the idol gradually makes his way up the stairway, until at last he reaches the top and pauses, tuning his ears for any movement that might indicate Venini's own stalking about. Only when he is confident that she isn't at least headed in his direction does he just as slowly lift the wooden hatch and peer out across the deck. If she's in his line of sight, then great; if she's not, he'll either have to hunt her down, or pray to the heavens she isn't already waiting directly behind him.-

Toxinmaster-Venini In reply to worstmate-hikiki [2011-01-08 00:43:24 +0000 UTC]
*No, Venini is quite unaware of Hikiki's presence, as she's already done the required look around, but seeing as there should not have been an escape route for him from that position before, least he'd sprouted wings and flown away like a real bumblebee. So her conclusion brings her to believe that, he must have slipped into the water somehow without causing much of a splash, as odd as it seems. So now she is keeping an eye on the water below, waiting for the odd bubble of air or flash of yellow to reveal his position, with the occasional glance towards the ladder one might use for boarding the ship, in case he tried to sneek back on board.*

worstmate-hikiki In reply to Toxinmaster-Venini [2011-01-08 00:56:44 +0000 UTC]
-Gently, gently lifting the hatch farther up enough to crawl out - first with a glance over the shoulder to make sure he was not about to get a pile of snow dumped on him - and gently, gently setting the wooden door back down. Sitting around in the cold stuff was not his idea of a fun time but again, this would all be worth it!! Hikiki scoops himself a snowball to snipe with and, sticking close to the barrels, crates and other obstacles behind which he could hide, sneaks back to where he had leaped off the ship and to where Venini was most likely still hovering around.
He peeps his head over a frozen barrel of rum just far enough to fix his eye on the lionfish and with a snap of his good wrist sends the snowball flying straight for the bull's eye between the two long spines protruding from the back of her shoulders. Without so much as waiting to see how true his aim was he ducks back behind his improvised fort and sets about outfitting himself with another spherical weapon or two, still quietly, to be prepared just in case she pegged his location and decided to stick her nose into the foxhole.-

*She's pretty much ready to call the search off and hope that Hikiki doesn't spend too long in the cold, something he should have enough brains for, even if he does seem suicidal at ti- And then her thoughts are cut off by the impact of something very cold hitting home between her shoulder-blades, making her yelp in surprise and discomfort as pieces of the snowball clings and starts to melt against her skin. Enraged, she whirls around, eyes narrowed and several threats of death and destruction ready to be uttered. However, her attention is met with... nothing, though she isn't stupid enough to actually believe that the snowball flew out of nowhere at her. No, this must be the deed of a certain Moorish idol, though she is not sure how he would have managed that.*
....
*With her frown deepening, she slowly leans down and gathers up some snow in her hands, back against the railing and with a deadly edge in her voice.*
I don't know how you managed that, but you're going to pay for it!

-Silence reigns over the deck in the moments following Venini's vow for revenge. Hikiki doesn't dare attempt to reposition himself now; tip-toeing around on a fair day is one thing, but doing so with crunchy snow underfoot is an entirely different matter. Certain that the lionfish is scanning her surroundings for any signs that might give her prey's location away, Hikiki makes sure to keep low so his breath doesn't rise over the barrels like smoke from a signal fire.
He's more than content to play the waiting game, but if he's going to make good on his earlier threat he'll have to find more vantage points - and more importantly, get to them without being seen.-

Toxinmaster-Venini In reply to worstmate-hikiki [2011-01-10 22:27:54 +0000 UTC]
*The waiting game is not Venini's favorite kind of a game, though she makes a valiant effort at it while scanning her surroundings for a hint of where the snowball descended from. Eventually though, she comes to the conclusion that Hikiki might be mimicking her own starting strategy and is sneaking around the corners of the "cabins", probably having ducked back into hiding as soon as he'd let go of the snowball.*
Well, if that's how you want to play it...
*And off she goes on her search, walking past some crates and barrels that perhaps she should have paid more attention to before stopping before the corner, waiting and tensing... and then leaping out into what she would have expected to be Hikiki's point of view, had he been hiding there, but instead of yellow, black and white, she is only met with the white of almost untouched snow and the brown wood of the ship's planks. Naturally, this revelation calls upon some rather colorful phrases that very much reflects the sailor aspect of her life.*

*Guess who after much considering back and forth has decided to approach the outlandish-acting Hikiki... Well, there's no mistaking those bright orange colors, so it shouldn't be hard to recognise Venini when she walks up to him, stopping a couple of steps away to have one last mental struggle to stop herself from backing out on this.*

-He would recognize Venini's voice sooner than her physical presence, since the Moorish idol was currently leaning against the railing at the bow of this ship, the baguette propped up beside him as if admiring the same view. Except Hikiki wasn't actually admiring the view, he was just having a pity party and staring off into space, idly humming a melancholy tune to himself.
He snaps out of his trance with a start and spins on the spot, eying Venini warily.-

*The thought of simply turning around and walking away is very tempting, it's not like she's looking forward to this after all. But no, she's not going to escape from this battle, so she takes a deep breath, preparing herself for what's about to come.*
Look, earlier I... might have overreacted a bit, hitting you was uncalled for and...
*She makes a small pause there before continuing, the next words leaving a sour taste in her mouth as if she'd just bitten into one of those lemons that Hikiki seems so fond of.*

-Hikiki drums his fingers on the railing looking anything but impressed with Venini's sacrifice of personal pride. For him what's tempting is to cut her off mid-sentence and heartily agree right along with her, but...she was a lady, and doing so would be rude!
His nonexistant eyebrows raise at her final words and suddenly he's in motion again; like a certain well-known animated skunk Hikiki zips over to sweep Venini backwards off her feet, leaning in dangerously close though having yet to put the kissy face he was making to use.-
Ah, mon amour, j'ai su que vous reviendriez. I knew you could not 'ate me!

*Suddenly, she finds that her viewpoint has changed to be looking up at Hikiki rather than on a more equal level, naturally this brings about a flash of panicked shock, given her memory of how the last time this happened.
But unlike the events during Valentine, only one of them has had his mind altered by outside forces this time. It's only narrowly that she avoids to respond to his advances with another slap, or perhaps something more painful, she came to apologise for earlier abuse after all. Rather, she puts one hand on his face and firmly pushes it away to keep it at a more comfortable distance.*

-Having Venini's hand squished in his face in refusal was not exactly the kind of result Hikiki was hoping for, but it sure beat actual violence! He mumbles a muffled something and waits for her to remove her hand before clearing his throat and repeating himself, still with that dreamy yet mischievous look on his face.-
I will forgive you Venini. I am charming and it confuses you, I understand.
-He pulls himself back upright and Venini along with him before stepping back a pace to regard her jovially with hands on his hips, almost as if she had never wronged him in the first place.- You are such a big girl for apologizeeng. Je suis fier. I love eet. -And he claps lightly and probably with an only slightly condescending air.-

Right...
*Normally, she'd probably argue the point of him being "charming" a bit more, but for now, she is able to overlook that out of relief that he actually let her back on her feet without any further attempts of unwanted intimacy.
However, now that this matter is, in her eyes, done with, there is still a question of why exactly Hikiki has suddenly started action like this. (If Rokuku is once again the cause of it then there will be hell to pay.) And this is one question that Venini plans on finding the answer to.*
I must admit that this.. change of attitude had me rather confused at first, would you perhaps like to share what inspired it?

-Having absolutely no idea what Venini means by this, because as far as Hikiki's concerned he's always had this kind of attitude (or rather, so far as his new self, he hasn't yet pondered how he behaved in the past), he chuckles a blithe "ce qui?" and waves his hand to dispel that silly notion.-
Do not be silly, ze only zing diffeirent about me eez mon nouveau modèle! And only because zey were out of bleu stripes for ze longest of times... -He sighs, straightening his ascot.- But today, I zought to myzelf, "Hikiki! You are much too young to be so...so so lifeless and loveless. And so ma cherie, eet eez a new day for your idole. A beautiful day! π: 0 β©: 1
Toxinmaster-Venini In reply to worstmate-hikiki [2010-08-25 01:46:18 +0000 UTC]
*This brings another frown to her face, partly because of the emphasis he puts on "loveless", and partly for as far as she knows, Hikiki has shown no signs of being anywhere close to this kind of behaviour in the past, or perhaps she didn't notice... Though the possibility of that is rather small, as she seriously doubts that he could have hidden this mildly eccentric personality with any amounts of effort for the time she has known him.
Which brings her to the conclusion that whatever happened to bring this about, Hikiki seems unaware of it, which means extra work for her to figure it out. Though this new Hikiki does seem more cooperative when it comes to sharing information, he certainly explained himself rather easily now, as little sense as it ended up making.
To make her further questions less suspicious, she drops the frown in favor of a thoughtful, and not completely unappreciating expression, focusing her attention on his new sense of style.*
I'm starting to see your reasoning, you do carry the style rather well.
*Thoughtfulness turns into a small smile, as if struck by inspiration.*

-Hikiki had other things on his mind apart from keeping important and trivial information alike secret, in fact that was the farthest thing from his current interests. It paid to be open with those you lived with, with those close to you...! He uses a thumb to tip his beret back a bit making no effort to hide his satisfaction with Venini's compliment.- Oh? Do you zink so? I am flattered.
-The very moment Venini's lips turn upward into that smile, however small it is, Hikiki snaps his fingers with an "aha!"- Zere eet eez, ah? What do I tell you. -He holds his open hands to either side of his face and pushes them outwards as if imitating a lovely blossoming flower or sunbeams spilling from behind a dark cloud.- Magnifique.
-He then claps his hands once in decisive manner, his grin widening with delight. The absurdity of the thought that Venini was even remotely interested in fashion, let alone his take on it, did not once cross his mind; he was too excited by the fact!- Not at all, mademoiselle! It would be my pleasure. Venez, I will show you ze way. -Hikiki forgoes the rule of "ladies first" in favor of doing just as promised and leading Venini toward the rope ladder.- You know, zere is a quaint leetle cafe near ze shop. *That was certainly not part of her plan, what she had assumed was that Hikiki would perhaps give her directions, maybe even a drawn map with his current courtesy level. She had, however, under no circumstances suspected that he'd ... in a way ... ask her out? Would that be a proper description of it? Normally she'd just insist that directions were more than enough, but seeing as her earlier actions that were based on routine got him to turn his back on her, she is in a way threading on thin ice with what will give her the response that she is looking for.
So she keeps a positive expression, keeping herself from resisting being led along like that, taking the opportunity of a temporary halt by the ladder to adress his offer.*
Why, that sounds like a lovely idea, Hikiki.
*In fact, the offer isn't particularly unpleasant in itself, after all, she is quite aware that Hikiki is rather picky with what he eats, so a place favored by him cannot possibly be all that bad.
She makes a nod of appreciation and makes her way down the ladder, taking a step away from it upon reaching the bottom but otherwise waiting staying to wait for him.*

-Now that was more like it! As he gestures with a sweeping bow for Venini to make her way down the ladder Hikiki gives himself a pat on the back; sure they'd gotten off to a bit of a bumpy start, but she was already accepting his invitation to go grab a drink? Ice Queen Venini? Hikiki, you dog you. He snickers into his shoulder to himself as he climbs down the ladder.-
-Once his feet are on solid ground Hikiki levels a finger apparently in the direction they would be heading.- Un, we saunteir along ze streets for a short while. Deux, we enteir ze undeirground alien shopping district. Trois, I point out ze cafe to you and we go inside. Bien? Zen let us depart.

*The alien shopping distric, she should have guessed that.. Where else would the particularly sneaky hybrid have been able to find the variety of shops that he claims to have visited up until now. She mentally kicks herself for not realising this sooner, but then again, she hasn't exactly been frequenting the place.*
Oh, no the cafe sounds like a good place to start, we hardly get any time for such things normally. It will be a nice change of pace.
*Of couse, she is very much aware that she herself is the very reason for that, but chooses not to adress that now. She has much more important things to think about after all, such as how to get herself out of clothes shopping. While not a complete horror, she has no particular liking for dressing up in restrictive garnments, and as such, no immediate interest in that activity.
Not to mention that it will steal precious time away from her intended search.
But for the moment, her main focus should be on getting there, so she takes a quick look around, to ensure herself that no one is watching and possibly getting the wrong thoughts about what is going on, before following Hikiki further on on their quest.*

Zis eez true, life on ze ship eez always so demanding...-A nod in agreement, and a wry sideways glance to catch any potential change in expression.-
-Their walk is about as pleasant as it could get barring the faint traces of awkwardness lingering over their situation. Be it his usual overconfidence or a simple certainty that the world is not out to get them, Hikiki strolls along with a leisurely gait, calm, cool and unquestionably collected. Not to mention kind of content. He hopes his compatriot is half as relaxed as he is, but if the way Venini had glanced about before they'd set off was any indication, that was probably asking a little too much from the prickly lionfish.
Now, if Venini had concerns as per the seediness of their destination, perhaps her fears would be alleviated once she caught sight of the building they would be taking five in. Their ambling brings them to a cafe that is for all intents and purposes exactly as Hikiki had described it: quaint, little, and just as charming as the Moorish idol thought himself to be. And Venini had been right in her assumptions, too; Hikiki could get down and dirty when he wanted to and so could stomach hanging around the sleaziest of dives as well, but at the end of the day (and when he was trying to impress) he preferred the classier establishments, or at least the ones where he knew he wouldn't wind up with some poor drunkard's tooth punched out and into his glass.-
Well, here we are: CafΓ© de Triomphe. She is lovely on ze outside, and lovely on ze inside too. Please, - He opens the door and stands aside, beckoning Venini with another grin and sweep of the hand into the cafe.- After you.

*Any suspicions she might have harbored regarding the state of the cafe dissolves into nothingness upon catching sight of it, why it looks even better than she had hoped. And while she is very much aware that it is Hikiki that she is there with (something she would have laughed at had someone suggested it only a day ago), he is actually managing to add to the charm of the place with his newly aquired manners.
She givs him a nod of appreciation at his offer, along with a "thank you", stopping briefly inside to glance around, searching for a strategically placed table that will allow her to continue her search even from a standstill. Fortunately for her, one of said tables seems to have been placed closely enough to a window, making a rather ideal choice which she lightly pulls Hikiki in the direction of, the small smile back on her face to prevent discovery of an actual intention in her choice.*
