Yeah the idea of a different past is interesting.but.. I also dont like comparing, but I have to do it so that you understand me good :
If you ve read Silmarillion, you possibly know, that dwarves were made up by Ulmo, cos he wanted to make his own people. Ulmo had heard about people before, but he didnt know what they would look like, and because he was unpatient to see people, he made his own nation from stone and metal, cos he loved stone and metal nad craft and smithing. And because of his not very precise knowlidge about men, dwarves looked little bit different, smaller, tougher...
Here also originates dwarves passion to metal, smithing and stuff, cos they are made up from that all actually ( except of gold, 
In your story, if you really want ( in the end ) introduce those "on the top of developement" dwarves, it would be a suggestion, if you explained their passion for smithing gold and stuff properly. Cos the origin of your dwarves, if I understood good, lies somewhere else - in an Iceland.

I hate to be picky, but as I am also a Tolkien fan (or at least I was when I was younger), I can't help making a correction: they weren't made by Ulmo, but Aulë
Anyway, I understand what you mean. I think it's about priorities and tastes: for me, dwarves liking gold and metals is not their main attractive. The defining characteristics of dwarves (for me) are their loyalty to the clan, their stoic philosophy and their phisical strength compared to their smaller size. Everything else is nice, but secondary.
I believe your idea of dwarves is different, and that's why you think differently. I don't have anything against that, of course; it's just that you look at them from a more "mythic" perspective, while I look at them as an experiment in human evolution (so to speak

... well, anyway that might be interesting, for a change you know. I also like philosophy in general, so focusing on this aspect of their being along with focusing on their society I accept fully.

I was going to write it in spanish (my mother tongue), in fact. But I don't know. I'm not good at writing (I'm just stubborn and haven't accepted it yet), so I write short excerpts every once in a while. Now that I know I'll have at least one reader, I might as well write it in english, or at least write something to illustrate what I think. I've written several similar things before (in english, I mean).
I'll keep you updated and you'll be the first to know if I do, ok? Thanks for the interest, it's very uplifting
