It's surprising how your daughter didn't understand this piece right off. I've never had to experience the worry that comes from having a father or other family member in the war and I've never had to experience a loss, but I can only imagine the grief that the character in this piece must be going through. Losing someone you love must be life-shattering. Beautiful use of symbolism and emotion. It's very poignant.

Oh, she's young, and she didn't have the cultural literacy to understand the symbolism. Which is okay--we had a great conversation, and now she does. Gosh, I appreciate the time you took to leave this kind comment, and I agree with you...the loss of brave men and women serving us and keeping us safe (military, police, firefighters) is hard on our society and especially on the loved ones to whom it's personal. I remember and honor their sacrifice regardless of my opinion of the decisions being made at this point...and I also recognize that hindsight is always 20/20 and I don't have access to all the information--I just see the big picture as the various media outlets paint it. And that might be distorted. My husband is doing the "I told you so" thing right now because the surge has made a statistically clear difference in the violence in Iraq at the least. I still question the effect of that on the globally active infrastructure of the terrorists, whose forces are naturally more flexible and liquid than ours can be. If the pressure gets greater in Iraq I assume they'd just move their activity elsewhere and focus on different aspects of their agenda. Maybe, maybe not. Again, there's a lot I can't know. I do know that I support the troops. My husband used to be one...and I'm glad he's just teaching in a middle school now. It's probably a little safer. Maybe.

yeah, everything just seems to be a little... fishy to me, but those troops out there are sacrificing so much that it wouldn't be fair to not support them. anyway, the comments are here to give constructive feedback, so that's what I intended to do. You're welcome for that!

wow.
that's really well done, you got so much meaning into that and put it together so well.
I understood the image basically, but all the explaination in the comment makes it even more meaningful.
great job.

Thank you. THank you so much. I appreciate it that the comment helped. I was surprised that my daughter didn't understand it, then I realized what a generation gap really is. I REMEMBER waiting for my father to come off his ship from the war in Vietnam.

I appreciate that and you can't believe how much. I think it's the best piece I've done, in the sense of a picture being worth a thousand words. Anyway. Thank you. (Any suggestions?)

Wow. You do really well at putting together things from stock. It seems like a seemless whole, instead of different elements pasted together. The composition is excellent, and all of the elements really fit. Excellent job!

I appreciate that, Anna...I had to explain it all to my daughters...I realized why it's not getting faves and so few comments. Unless it's just too cluttered, maybe. People younger than we are, too young to remember 'Nam, don't understand the symbols. All they understand is what the media says they should think about things. I feel terribly sad about that as I put so much into it.

Thank you. I realized that my daughters didn't really understand the symbolism in it so I posted more of an explanation...
