Description

"Thank you, Steve. This 'Love Drunk' phenomenon has affected fourteen percent of the population, and it is steadily increasing day by day. As you've stated, it has only been five days since we started seeing casualties, and not much is known. However, this has presented a unique opportunity for private corporations to fund research into the field. In fact, scientists from Cupid InterCorp. have already published the first fascinating findings. They state that listening to the lyrics of any song about love from start to finish contributes to..."

Freya switched off the television in disgust.

"Well, I'm not leaving the house until this is all over. Thank goodness we bought our milk, bread and eggs before this all started. Right, Corwin?"

Corwin woofed, his tail wagging excitedly as Freya scratched him behind his ears.

"Looks like it's just you and me, and my one true love... books."

Freya hunkered down in the sofa, tightened the thick blanket that was wrapped around her body for warmth, and immersed herself into the fantastical adventures of another universe...

An indeterminate number of hours later, Freya's stomach rumbled in protest, crying out for sustenance. Hunger urged her to escape from her trappings of layers and pushed her towards the kitchen. There, Freya made herself a hearty snack and turned to find Corwin scratching and snuffling at the back door.

Usually around this time, Freya would take Corwin out for a walk in the nearby park, but, since she was under self-proclaimed house arrest, her only option was to open the back door.

Corwin barked in relief as he loped outside to the yard, ran a few circles and proceeded to fulfill his life's mission of chasing squirrels, rabbits and birds.

Meanwhile, Freya returned to her book. She was seven minutes into the heart-wrenching moment of lives torn asunder when Corwin rushed back in, jumped onto the seat next to her, opened his maw and started singing (to Freya's great horror)...

(Love is a song, love is a song, we're singing it)
(Love is a song, love is a song, we're singing it)

The song's in my head again
Of things that I never said
In my heart you'll hear the words
It's heard in the things we do
It's all in the things we do

(Love is a song, love is a song, we're singing it)
(Love is a song, love is a song, we're singing it)

No need to write the notes
We just improvise and flow
Where, tomorrow only knows
Just watching the garden grow
This is the melody we know

And your silence sings I can hear it

Oh, every day that comes; every year gone by
Writes the ballad of you and I
Every sound I hear, ringing out so clear
Writes the ballad of you and I
Of you and I...
