Really nice rendition I like to see Morgoth with a face, there are too much faceless Morgoths, that's boring (and if he had a mask how could he be stabbed by Thorondor's claws ? Okay Thorondor can still hurt him through a mask, probably, but I don't like the idea).
Very original rendition of the Silmarili, I like how you included them in the Iron Crown. Now that you did it I don't remember seeing any sentence about the Silmarili being round or spherics, are they ?
The crown itself is cool, classical, inspired by Sauron's helmet I guess (but it does look a little like the helmet on Moria's door too so I think Tolkien liked the "crowned-helmet" type anyway). The pikes on the shoulders are an archetype of the "bad-guy-armor" but it fits (even Turner Mohan do it : turnermohan.deviantart.com/art… )
Colors are great : the reddish armor is cool, so is the really pale skin of Morgoth. (I imagine him black though with this type of skin for Sauron, I made all a reflexion on Valar's "skins" and colors here -totally fan-made though- : turnermohan.deviantart.com/art… ) But may be for contrast (a dark lord, in a dark castle into a dark land... that may be too much dark).
The things I don't like : the nasal shaped like a leaf on his nose and his expression. The first one cause I don't imagine a leaf on Morgoth's helmet and both cause I think they are altering the feeling. I feel like if he is being stupidly haughty or, worst, like if he is acting dumb (I think especially that the lips should be changed). A grimmer face will feet better the lord of Evil.
Nice design still

Well this was just a doodle really, and my first time drawing him, so I imagine he'll change a lot whenever I draw him again. But I drew more on emotions and instinct rather than logic from the text. I like to do that with designs sometime and then correct them later on to help bring out some new ideas, if that makes sense.
Yeah I didn't notice how leafy the nose guard was until after I posted it, it was just suppose to be spiky, but it's an easy thing to fix the next time I draw him, if I even keep the nose guard.
I imagine him black too, but only sometimes. My mental image for each Valar changes dramatically based on whatever part of the story I'm reading. Even after Morgoth loses his ability to change at will, I still imagine some natural changes occurring. For instances, the scratch would be one thing, but also maybe the black I have in his eyes here would spread more across his face.
I've never posted any Sauron, but mine isn't that far off from Phob's visual interpretation, albeit more mascline

As for the Silmirils, I just something easy to fit with the crowns. I'm not sure if I will ever settle on a design I'll actually like for the Silmarils. I can't remember them being describe as spherical, but circle shapes are usually reserved for the good guys,so I didn't go that route here.

Yeah your technic does make sense. When I'm drawing myself (not often actually) I have to look up to references (if it's not an in-class doodle) to have something which does acyually look quite acceptable so I do look at the book in the same time but I totally understand you are letting inspiration guiding you and checking the details later. Hope I could work this way. Well actually I do most of the time but in my case it looks like awful crap.
Well I don't think that Valar changing their appearance is a problem as they actually can, as you say. And you are not the only one to see Morgoth in different shapes even after the death of the Trees.
Hehe I didn't have any problem with a female Sauron but an androgynous is way closer of my feeling so I guess I'm gonna like yours.
Anyway, always good to talk to you and exchange on your drawings, keep going !
(now I have to comment the one with the deer )

Yes, androgynous is the word! That's my Sauron.
