That's a great picture of a Lanner falcon! ~ The Oregon Zoo just got a Lanner, but we have to keep him inside until the weather warms up 'cause Lanners are African falcons and we got ours from (I think) Zoo Atlanta.

absurdus In reply to Ara-Tun [2007-12-19 21:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I didn't know that the Lanner was from Africa, how neat. I hope the Oregon Zoo Lanner stays happy enough inside.

Congratulations on the DD! Wonderful shot.
On the topic of the 'hot debate', I can say without a doubt that this is definitely an adult male lanner falcon. Trust me, I know birds as well as I know horses, if not better.

The coloration of Peregrines does vary with the region, but not enough for one to look like this. They have a full dark helmet marking on their head, and they also have black horizontal barring on their underside.
The Lanner falcon can be distiguished by the red on the top of its head, the thin black moustachial streak you can see here, and its spotted underbelly, clearly apparent in this photo. Also, they're lighter in build than peregrines.

So there!

I am definitely not a falcon expert, but it never seemed to look like a peregrine to me. ("Colors so different, wow!") Thank you for the comment.

IMNOTCRAZY1 [2007-12-05 03:26:47 +0000 UTC]

It's a Lanner, I'd have to say. Peregrines don't have red crowns. They are commonly mixed up with Peregrines.

furiousfelinefuries [2007-12-05 03:18:15 +0000 UTC]

I would say peregrine..but that has been said many times... I answer to it, duck hawk . they are the fastest birds in the world, I believe. topping above 200 mph when they dive. they usually eat small mammals and other birds of small stature .

motsumi [2007-12-05 02:49:58 +0000 UTC]

Can't be a Peregrine. The peregrine has bars on the legs, under the wings and a white breast. And the hood has more black on it with a peregrine. So this is definitely a Lanner, I agree with everyone else that said Lanner falcon.

That's a Paragrine falcon.
They're my favorite falcon, because they're the fastest.

Peregrine.
Beautiful birds.
The female is larger then the male, such is the case with most raptors.
I have a friend who was a falconer.

I wanna touch it..

From my 5 second search it could be either a lanner or Peregrine.

Grats on the DD! I'm still pretty sure it's a Lanner. My character Rita Tull used to be made from peregrine, cheetah and pegasus - but changed it to lanner because of coloration purposes, so I'm pretty sure this is one. Just stunning birds, either of em.

its a peregrine falcon!

Fantasy-Dreamer-489 [2007-12-04 23:47:17 +0000 UTC]

Depends on region. The only common hawk I've seen is the red tailed hawk native to the southern states.
I think it's a peregrine falcon though.

I'm going to use this for a whole bunch of projects!

Lovely raptor you've got there. As for my best guess it would have to be the North American Prairie Falcon.
