*While a Friesian/TWH cross IRL is called a Friewalker, it is not a breed ... yet. The cross (from what I can find) may or may not show feathering, may or may not be gaited, and are usually black. I have only been able to find first generation crosses. The Mahtava is an imagining of what may come if this cross takes off and becomes a breed of its own, much like the Georgian Grade was able to do.*

Breed Status:  Semi-Open
You may breed from existing Mahtava or from TWH and Friesians. Please see the Breeding and Foals  sheet for more information.
You may not create new foundation Mahtava at this time.

Breed Rules:
  • Please submit your Mahtava's reference to the registry at
  • Breedings between Mahtavas and other natural breeds (excluding TWH, Friesians, and certain pre-approved breeds) produce crosses, not register-able as full-blooded Mahtava.
  • Mahtava do not come in created colors at this time. Any color (other than gray) found IRL is acceptable.
  • Mahtava crossed with fantasy/otherworldly/unnatural breeds at this time are not register-able as full-blooded Mahtava.

Common Questions:

What disciplines can the Mahtava be used for?
  • The Mahtava are powerful and graceful, they excel in many disciplines. Suggested disciplines include:
    • Saddleseat
    • Dressage
    • Driving
    • Side Saddle
What gaits will my Mahtava have?
  • Full Mahtava always show gaits. The most common gaits are the Flatfoot and Running Walks. While your horse may not have all gaits, they will naturally show at least these two.
  • Appendix Mahtava do not have to be gaited to be registered.
How should my horse be shod?
  • Mahtavas hooves are so strong that they may not need shoes at all. And certainly, they should never be shod with 'performance-enhancing' shoes. Even if kept barefoot, they should be checked regularly by a farrier to keep them trimmed and healthy.
  • The Mahtava registry treasures natural movement over all. Movements 'enhanced' by any means are not approved of in the breed.
How is the Mahtava's movement achieved?
  • The breed's gaits are completely natural and performed from birth. Natural movement is prized and should not depend on artificial 'aids' to produce exaggerated movement.
But I like the 'Big Lick' movement
  • This is not the breed for you. No Mahtava will produce a 'Big Lick'. No horse will produce such a movement naturally. Please take the time to learn about what is done to achieve such a movement as all methods rely on causing pain to the animal: www.humanesociety.org/issues/t…
