Common Questions:

What disciplines can a Pigeon Pegasus be used for?
Doves have a long and proud history of service in war correspondence and supply delivery. One of the most popular disciplines by breed enthusiasts today are the homing trials. For more information see the Keeping and Ranking sheet *to come*
Other suggested disciplines include:
Air races
Evasive maneuvers
Endurance air-treks
companion animals
guide horses
search and rescue

What age will my Dove be able to fly?
First flight is achieved around the time of full-weaning. Typically between four to six months of hatching (not four or six months after the mare laid her egg). Consistent flight usually takes another two months to master. At this point (in the wild) the the father returns to a bachelor flock, leaving the mare and foal in their family group. For more information see the Breeding and Foals sheet *to come*
How does my Dove learn to fly?
Doves will naturally stretch their wings from birth. Once their tail flight-feathers start to grow in they will begin attempting to take off. Training for flying with weights should not start before 3 years of age. The weight changes should be gradual (think lifting weights... don't tear any muscles!).
 Should I shoe my Dove?
NO. A Dove's hooves are cloven and very hard. The excess weight is also not helpful for balance or maneuvering in the air.
 What is a Dove's lifespan?
Very comparable to Shetlands, Miniature horses and other small horse breeds. It is not uncommon to find a domestic Dove over the age of 30. Older Doves are more likely to loose the muscle quality needed for true flight, and so wild pegasi are often not found after their late 20s.
