This doesn't really work for me. As a trompe le oleil it is unsuccessful. Also the composition is centered and boring.

True, it's not photorealistic, but I find photorealism boring anyway. The geometric imperfection in shading creates a sense of texture. The composition is questionable, but it could be remedied simply by cropping it so the black liquid is near the left border and the fawcet is in the upper right corner.
Overall I think your critique is a bit harsh, as I find the piece interesting in a non sequitur way.
