Description Since the ART OF WATCHMEN book has come out, I feel comfortable posting the art I did for the 8 minutes I worked on the film...

First, the back story. I was contacted by representatives of 300 director Zack Snyder, while 300 was in postproduction, about doing designs for 4 of the 6 main characters from WATCHMEN. Zack wanted me to design the look of the characters, and then do 4 'cover-quality' color illustrations to hep convince the suits & ties at Warner Bros. Pictures to green-light his WATCHMEN film.

I did a first round of sketches, talked with Mr. Snyder, did a second round of looser sketches based on our discussions, and then was given the go-ahead to proceed with designing full illustrations. Since I was running late on CATWOMAN covers as well as other things, I was juggling the assignments. Since I do art for whomever yells the loudest, the WATCHMEN stuff took a minor backburner placing on my To Do List. I never heard from them, they never called or e-mailed saying "Hey, hurry up, you bastard!", so I worked on Selina Kyle.

Then, 300 came out.

It did so well in its opening weekend, Warner Bros. green-lit WATCHMEN the following Monday.

I guess my services weren't required, because I never heard back from the WATCHMEN people. I could've finished the color pieces on principle, like a good freelancer, but I'm so slow that my time is kinda precious, and I don't want to waste time drawing something that isn't going to be used. So, I just chalked it up to "That's business...".

The WATCHMEN people contacted me much later, asking for high-rez versions of the sketches for the inevitable ART OF book. I pointed out that, since I never actually did the assignment I was asked to do, I had never been paid. To their credit, once we agreed on a rate for just the sketches, they check arrived so fast, the envelope was warm, the ink was still wet, and the FedEx guy was out of breath. The WATCHMEN movie guys are a pretty respectable gang, as far as my experience goes.

*****Ozymandias*****

Director Zack Snyder said he really wanted to get away from the gold body suit with purple tunic look for the Big O, and kinda agree wit the sentiment. Making that suit from the comic could make or break the film; if the audience laughs at Ozymandias, WATCHMEN just won't work dramatically.

We discussed ideas, and Zack really liked the idea of keeping the 'Alexander the Great' motif. My design was basically a handsome blonde guy in a cuirass (sculpted breastplate) but with tights on underneath. In the final film, they seem to have gone with a straight-up BATMAN rubber bodysuit, but at least it doesn't look silly (to me, anyways). We'll see how he plays in context, onscreen.

****The Comedian***

As you can see, I was asked to do no designs for Dr. Manhattan or Rorshach. Why? Because Zack said they were going to make it to the screen virtually identical to the comic; they would require no 'adapting'.

Well, since the Comedian is just wearing military gear with a couple patriotic shoulder pads, I kinda thought he wouldn't need to be adapted for screen, either. But, they wanted to see a design, so I did one. It's basically the same as the comic. If I had gone to the final illustration, I would've just given him hyper-accurate & realistic gear; sort of the way Michael Golden loves to draw guns and equipment.

Well, thats my WATCHMEN experience. When people ask me how much involvement I had in the WATCHMEN film, I usually just say: "Well, for $10, I think they're gonna let me see it...".

Sent an earlier message but no notification that it was sent so posting again.
Is there any detailed documentation of the first fight between The Comedian
and Ozymandias when he was younger? I read that Ozymandias lost, but would
like to know exactly what happened when they first encountered one another.
Haven't read the graphic novel but like the story and the movie. Actually think
it is one of the best Super Hero movies ever made. Would be interesting to
do a Watchmen movie showing the adventures of the Minute Men and then
Watchmen before 1985.

Wanted to ask one question. How come there is no detailed information on the first Comedian/Ozymandias fight when Comedian beat him? It is said to be in the book by Hollis Mason "Under The Hood" but there is not enough information detailing how it started and what happened. Note, I haven't read the graphic novel but like the
movie.

I suggest reading the graphic novel! It'll explain things way better than I could.

I like your design for Ozy more. The Batman stuff they did in the movie robbed him of his majesty (both in his own mind and in those who saw him). The suit you imagined does the idea of Ozymandias justice, even considering the time frame of the audience who would be watching him.

The shirt of the Comedian is a nice touch (Red and whites stripes, I presume). And in Ozzy, the breast plate, could had worked, but whitout NIPPLES. But the cape, even if give him a royal image, it feels like it takes away his mobility.

i saw the movie. it was pretty good, but how did ozzymandias get so strong? like near the end he was just OWNING night owl and rorshack and he even caugt a bullet! im just saying... wtf!

AdamHughes In reply to MrOla [2009-03-14 19:46:17 +0000 UTC]

Crazy movie physics, who knows. Everyone in the movie was as strong and agile as if they were hackers in the Matrix. Although the bullet-catching was in the comic, and was the result of decades of martial discipline.

I adore your Ozymandias design, it suits him incredibly well, very suave indeed. I must confess though that I did love his fabulous purple and gold ensemble in the comic, but I know for sure it wouldn't have gone down well in the theatre Although I really enjoyed the final outcome, I would've loved to see Ozy wearing this in the film, it's very true to his Alexander obsession, and as I've said, it looks good. Anyways what I'm basically saying is I love your rendition of Veidt!

I think that the Ozy they settled on looks ridiculous. It's a shame too, all they had to do was keep the cuirass instead of imitating it in the bodysuit style. I like your sketches better than the final version.

your designs are great, they stayed true to the comic which is more than I can say for the film, they say in Wizard that the end was changed bit of a rip off but Ill still be front and center to watch it either crash and burn or start to jetisson towards the heavens

Great entry. Not only did I enjoy the story behind the designs but also ended up learning that a "cuirass" is the name of an ancient armor, not an insult.

But then I was hoping you'd talk a little more about the Comedian's mask. For what I've seen so far I guess the mask was edited out of the movie. Is that so?

I must say, I am a HUGE Watchmen fan. I've been super psyched for the movie since I
first saw the trailer. When I looked in my deviations ans saw costume designs from you,
I almost passed out. LOL. I really love the Ozymandias design. Super sleek and sexy.
I wish they had used it. The new one they chose is okay, but not as Alexander as I would have liked.
Your design stays very true to that aspect. I'm still looking forward to the movie.
Very nice work!!! I wonder what you would have done for Silk Spectre...
Sorry, couldn't resist the curiosity. hah-ha

I did do a Silk Spectre design (the 1970s-80s Spectre); it's in my gallery! I'm glad you like the Ozzy design; I'm looking forward to the movie and can't wait to see how the final designs work in the context of the film!

SailorBetch In reply to AdamHughes [2009-02-08 02:57:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I saw. Then I felt stupid for not checking
all my deviations before commenting.
I loved all the designs you made.

I'm pretty excited for the movie. I'm doing
a book report on Watchmen for school. I have to
make a poster. It's gonna be cool. I hope I
can post it. Lot's of Gibbon's-esque BRIGHT colors.

I think that ultimately the exocution of the film
will compensate for any mis-steps in costume choice.
I just really hope the squid is there. I've heard
some things online about there NOT being a squid.
That's really the only thing that worries me.
Otherwise, I'm fully on board.

Once again, Mr. Hughes, YOU ROCK!!!

I'm just a little worried that, in the movie, Adrian's costume looks TOO dark and dramatic.
*spoiler ahead*

In the comics you never see too much of him until the last two issues. Now, the way they're advertising him along with the other main characters and the "heavy" lines of dialogue he gets about changing the world everyone will assume hes the bad guy! Then again, even Batman looks like a bad guy, but its still just to intimidate criminals.

Anyway, really good work on the Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II designs!

It's a beautiful design, but making it straight-up black is a bad idea, in my opinion. Ozymandias has a much softer feel to him and the black gives his part in the movie away, whereas in the book I was surprised. Was there really no way to go for a very dark, royal violet?

i hate to argue since i know little of live action things... or things in general... but i do not like what they did for Oz.

to me the outfit overpowers the actor and at that point they should have stuck to the purple and gold.

i love your sketch though, and as an adaptation it makes a lot more sense

SarahFriesen [2009-02-04 02:28:38 +0000 UTC]

I definitely like your Ozymandias better than what they seem to have landed on for the movie. I do think he looks silly in those clips... far too close to the campy 90s Batman movies suits. It actually made me laugh out loud at first before I realized that was Adrian and then I was like "...wtf?"
