Personality:
A highly praised and well-thought of deer, thanks to the rare flowers growing in her leaves and on her antlers and the aura of serenity she gives off. Hanako is one of the more “beloved” warlords, despite being one of the youngest. She enjoys the presence of others and is not one to shy away from flattery but knows how to keep her head and thoughts straight. She’s more than willing to be stern and serious to ensure that things are successful and beneficial, and her natural leadership shines through even in the most chaotic of situations. She is also diplomatic (if not manipulative) and can be a bit arrogant, though she doesn’t let it all get to her head. Her strength lies in her way with beauty and words, able to manipulate and convince others to do her bidding.
History:
Growing up in a kingdom known for beautiful landscapes and warm climate is never a bad thing, and Hanako certainly didn’t take it for granted. Somewhat of a serious child, even in her youth, it was hard for Hanako to make friends, having unusually high standards for manners. But she did have two close companions: Eboshi and Katsumi. Perhaps it was the two girls’ more rough-and-tumble nature, so different from her own graceful and regal stature, that drew her to them, but the three of them were inseparable; she even received one of twin bells from Katsumi, a symbol of their friendship.
But as is often the case, real life gets in the way of even the strongest of bonds. An accident befell one day - Katsumi knocked down a tree that would’ve endangered Hanako’s home, only to send it crashing on the Deerling by mistake! - and Hanako became bedridden for weeks. Around the same time, the battle of Yamatai occurred, and when Hanako’s father refused to fight, the consequences of his choice spread like wildfire throughout her province, innocents punished for the actions of their lord. It escalated beyond anyone’s control… finally hitting Hanako at home, when her father succumbed to his people’s anger and lament… and in her young grief, Hanako blamed Katsumi. Despite this she still kept the friendship bell hidden on her sash, a sign that deep down Haneko wished to still be friends with the future shogun.
And so she grew into a ladylike, confident, and stony woman, cold-hearted and capable only of tough love. Distrustful of most strangers, Hanako showed Aetherians only contempt when they first arrived on Sazanami - and even now, she would rather walk through fire than work alongside them. But even so, perhaps this attitude only comes from a heart that has seen too much darkness and only wants to keep others from feeling the same pain. Indeed, she has all but put a stop to the nefarious ways some of her bathhouses are run, and she always welcomes those who are injured and ill, housing them to the best of her ability. There might be something to this stuffy deer after all…
She’s currently helping to run things in the Suzaku province, while Koaru is unable to do so.
