This is beautiful! Was this done using colored pencils or did you use other mediums as well?

Agaave In reply to Jaytham-Firestar [2013-06-15 05:15:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!

I painted the base with watercolors and then added details with colored pencils.
There are also some white gel pen details especially in clouds.

Amazing detail and color! How long did this take you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to shadowshot9 [2013-06-15 05:14:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

I honestly have no idea how long this took me altogether...
I spent over a week drawing this, few hours per night. That's the best estimation I can give.
You're not the first person asking this so maybe I actually have to clock next time when I draw a traditional piece in this size.

shadowshot9 In reply to Agaave [2013-06-15 06:03:22 +0000 UTC]

I'm trying to compare your time to mine for something this complex, and I must say you have me beat... Either way it's absolutely beautiful! Good job!

Agaave In reply to shadowshot9 [2013-06-15 06:37:01 +0000 UTC]

I am really slow drawer and I like to give my pieces time. I also often let them sit on my table and just look at them from distance to see which areas still need work or which colors would fit best. I am just enjoying the whole drawing process!

shadowshot9 In reply to Agaave [2013-06-15 11:38:54 +0000 UTC]

I do that also, but I also draw what ever pops into my head so I will be running several drawings at once...

Agaave In reply to shadowshot9 [2013-06-16 06:38:46 +0000 UTC]

Same here, I also usually have few pictures in progress at once but one of them is the "main" work I concentrate more and like to finish at first.
I guess we have rather similar drawing habits.

The one main thing is a good idea, up until now I've been doing mine in cycle...

Again i just love the colors and all the details especially on the dragon *_*
You did just a great job will al those scales! Just breathtaking!
I also love how you drew the feathers this time.
Damn! I don't know what to write.
I'm so impressed by this piece. Every picture you upload is better then the last one.
I'm glad you've uploaded so many pics recently
Even if i need some time to comment on them xD
Just keep up your aweseome work :3

Did you use watercolors for the clouds and a whitegel pen?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Windspirit-Aquaeris [2013-05-05 05:32:22 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much; I really appreciate your feedback!
Yep, I painted the clouds with watercolors and added those white edges with gel pen.

I am also happy that I have managed to be so productive lately.
I try to keep up the pace because - well - drawing just makes me happy.
And it is also nice to get comments for these "older" pieces (and this is not even that old yet) so no need to feel bad even if you don't have a chance to comment right away.
I am glad to receive your comments whenever you have time to write them!

Your creatures keep looking AWESOME.

I would disagree with the description though. Its defiantly a feathered dragon, or a dragon WITH feathers to be more precise. But when I hear peacock dragon I expect to see a massive feathery tail.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Adreos [2013-04-20 06:29:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank youuuu!

I see your point there but in this case 'peacock' refers to those big, round featheres.

JEAikman [2013-04-14 06:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Love how vibrant all these colours are I also love how the shape of the clouds almost mimics the pattern of dragon scales

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to JEAikman [2013-04-14 17:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

I didn't even notice the similar shape of scales and clouds - happy accident there!

almaticani [2013-04-13 18:07:47 +0000 UTC]

Look at all those feathers!!!!!!!!!!!!!So fluffy and
perky, and the happy pose! The only thing I kind of
find distracting that the dragon kind of melts in the sea
of the clorfull background which is beautifully executed
but just a bit too strong for such a happy fella.^^
All in all I will always love what you draw.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to almaticani [2013-04-14 06:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!

Yeah, background ended up having too similar colors than the character has...
I made same mistake earlier [link] and people mentioned me about that back then but for some unknown reason I did it again here.
Hopefully the third time is a charm and in next dragon drawing there will be more varying colors.

But as I said earlier,
you improve quite quickly.

Agaave In reply to ReQuay [2013-04-08 19:11:50 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thank you so much!

By the way, now that you mentioned a word traditional: I grabbed my dusty drawing tablet and tried if I still can do any digital art.
It has been more than a year since have painted digitally and I found out that my skills are really really rusty.
But it was fun for a change so probably there will also be some digital pieces from me this year.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ReQuay In reply to Agaave [2013-04-08 19:56:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I am so looking forward to seeing both mediums from you! I love your style of drawing. And somehow, I imagine that your digi skills aren't nearly as rusty as you think they are.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to ReQuay [2013-04-10 04:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Glad to hear that!

Oh and believe me, they are!
Especially what comes to drawing long hair... I was struggling with mane yesterday and almost thought I should leave the horse I am painting bald-headed.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ReQuay In reply to Agaave [2013-04-10 17:20:45 +0000 UTC]

Poor (almost) bald horse... but no, your manes/tails are too beautiful to go missing. I have faith it will turn out stunning.

Ember-Eyes [2013-04-07 07:20:06 +0000 UTC]

Whoa. This is bursting with awesomeness. So much details - you took care to attend to each individual scale, every single feather...your dedication truly shows in this piece! Beautiful colors, too! And the overall design of the dragon is mind-blowingly stunning. Great work!!! I totally love this!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Ember-Eyes [2013-04-08 14:20:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!

I guess I haven't done as much scales in one picture earlier but it actually wasn't as horrible job as it might look.
Or actually maybe that's the reason: there was certain novelty coloring them.
With feathers I remember wishing that there was somekind of copy-paste method also in traditional art.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ember-Eyes In reply to Agaave [2013-04-15 06:45:53 +0000 UTC]

Lol. Making traditional art would be so much easier if there was a copy-paste button, or an undo button, or an escape button. Or if you could save it before trying something, and if it fails, hit the close button and choose not to save the changes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Ember-Eyes [2013-04-16 14:26:22 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! I would have needed undo button countless times!

Khanorn [2013-04-07 06:50:39 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Khanorn [2013-04-08 14:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Kiitos paljon palautteesta!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Khanorn In reply to Agaave [2013-04-09 06:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Ollos hyvä Pitäähän jonkun antaa palautetta korjattavistakin asioista tai kehitys jämähtää. Ei sillä ettet olis tosi hyvä jo nyt

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Khanorn [2013-04-10 04:43:24 +0000 UTC]
