Description This is the second picture from my Three Dragon Pictures project! The picture is based on Reixma 's description .

I had different plans for this picture: I wanted to create a dark, modern cityscape with a badass-looking dragon watching over it. Well, if you look at the picture, you can see that my original vision didn't quite emerge... Instead, have a medieval town surrounded by castle walls and a gentle looking dragoness overseeing it from the distance. This is the main reason why it took so long from me to draw this picture; I just couldn't get my original vision on the paper. But finally I decided to scrap it and draw something totally different but still fitting with Reixma 's description.

I might have to draw my original vision some day in the future but until then, I hope you like this interpretation!

Tools: Watercolors, markers, colored pencils, acrylics, Gimp

Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. Who knows maybe your original idea will appear again in another picture.

BESIDES! What's wrong with a benevolent looking dragon?

I really hope the original idea will materialize from my brains on a paper one day... We'll see.
But of course there is nothing wrong with gentle dragons, they win hearts!

Aww this is very magically looking art. I really love everything in here - bluish coloring, castle and high detailed dragon. :3 It look like illustration from a fairy tale book :3 his kind expression is very lovely. I do also love the way how you did the rocks

I really enjoyed drawing a big and detailed piece like this; too bad I am too often too lazy to draw backgrounds.

Hehe yeah me too xD drawing backgrounds is very boring although I realized how poor were looking my old drawings - simple characters on white board.. it looks so.. empty xD

Same here, my old drawings look so empty as well with just a character standing on a white paper...

Wow, this is gorgeous! I'm sorry you didn't manage to get your vision of a dark, modern cityscape in the picture--that said, I looove the castle walls, and the lines of pines flowing in and out of the mist. The dragoness is beautiful, this one's got lovely detailing on each scale, and the eye-like patterns on the wings are also beautiful. I think you did a wonderful job on the whole!

Thank you very much!

Now that some time has passed since I uploaded this, the vision I had in my head has started to fade so I kinda like this version more now.
I am really glad to hear that you like, especially mentioning the wing patterns made me happy because I had hard time figuring out what kind of tattoos I'd give to dragon. ^^

You come up with more and more great artworks!
I cannot say which of them i like most but this one is one of my favorite.
I love just everything about it.
At first, the perspective is so well chosen and i like the pose of the dragon.
Simple but still graceful, not only because of the colors. I like this blue combined with brown ( or even gold?) with again blue tips and scales and claws as well as the fins. Great design! I also like the horn's design and the light blue markings on the wings.
Besides the background is breathtaking as well. Again all those details especially of the castle! Great job. I also like thi kinda sky you've drawn here. The clouds really look interesting and the white dots alsmost look like as if it's snowing a lill bit
Well, i could stare at this pictures for hours and i still would find something new :3
I just love this one, don't know why

Btw, I must say i like this version more than the one you actually wanted to draw.
The other one ( i don't want to sound rude) would have been too main stream in my opinion ... And i think this wouldn't have been your style. Sure, if pictures varify in colors and character's design it's maybe more interesting.
But i watch you because of the bright colors and delighted characters
Your pictures always make me smile and i wanna draw as well

Thanks a lot!

I am trying to push myself little further with backgrounds and actually paint something else than color splashes there. At least once in a while, cannot totally abandon my beloved color splashes.
I was planning on drawing more buildings this year but so far this has been the only one... but hey, it's a start! Hopefully there is more to come before year changes.
I am happy to hear that you like pose and perspective - those are not my strongest areas so it is great to hear that I have succeed with them!

You didn't sound rude at all by saying that other version would have been main stream and wouldn't be my style. Maybe that's why struggled with it so much, I was going so far from my own style.
But I really want to draw that vision some day so I need to find a way to combine the idea with my joyfull storybook style.

Thank you again, I really appreacite your thorough comments!

Vertebrates are tetrapods, not hexapods.
The wings are nothing else than transformed upper limbs due to evolution, not an additional 3rd pair of limbs.

Agaave In reply to CallunaDraconis [2014-08-13 19:06:10 +0000 UTC]

CallunaDraconis In reply to Agaave [2014-08-18 18:10:01 +0000 UTC]

Hyvinkin rankka!

Harjoitus tekee metsurin mestarin!

Agaave In reply to CallunaDraconis [2014-08-31 15:57:52 +0000 UTC]

Me ollaan metsureita kaikki...

Um... I don't think that anyone can beat a piece of art that includes a dragon, castle, and gorgeous blue/yellow hues!  Period.

First, let's just start with that smexy blue beast... those blue scales are amazing!  How long did it take you to draw in each of those?  You also have a knack for making dragon claws look so natural... I adore those devilish nails.  I really like the way you were able to combine his body scales with under-body texture, next to a stunning design on his wings and the fins (I don't know what they're called on top of a dragon's back) across his top-line... each part is so unique and yet fits together so well on your design.

The background is absolutely gorgeous.  I really like the detail in the up close rocks, and then how you are able to capture different parts of the landscape as the scenery zooms out... the misty forest, the stunning castle, and the towering mountains against a starry sky.

This is an absolutely gorgeous piece of artwork hun - definitely something to be so proud of.

Thank you again for your wonderful thorough comment!
I agree: dragons and castles - what could be better! Although I think purple might be able to beat blue hues...

The scales actually didn't took very long because I made them in koi fish style which fast and easy way to draw scales. Just draw slanted crossing (of course following the body shape of the creature), shape the scales a bit rounder and voilà, scales have emerged!
I don't know either the names for dragons body parts (I don't know them even in my own language) so I just call those fins/frills/ridges or what ever sounds suitable for each case.

I am glad you like the background; I am still struggling with perspective and making things look like they were closer/in the distance but I guess it is just matter of practice.
Should just draw more and more landscapes! And buildings...

Thank you sweety for your encouraging words!

Watercolors are such awesome media! I am actually using just a drawing paper that can handle water; proper watercolor papers have too rough textures in my liking and I have found it difficult to add details with colored pencils on such papers. But if you're going for pure watercolor works and not adding any colored pencils then watercolor paper would be better choice. ^^
