Portrait Scape of Contemporary Migration (2013-14) intends to capture the faces frequently appearing in Malaysian urban landscapes nowadays. This group of paintings record portraits of migrant workers in the city streets and is a culmination of a recording and documentation that lasted for two years. I have always been keen to shape the social group portrait, describing the inner emotions beneath the social facade. Current globalisation has caused the largest migration of mankind in history in which billions of immigrants and diasporas promote hybridity in the global cultural movement. The effects on culture will be far-reaching. Inspired by mobility of migration activities in Malaysia, I'm trying to juxtapose the movement of migrant workers against local residents framed within varying times and spaces. Furthermore, at the same time, I am also implying that there is a connecting symbiotic relationship between the inndividuals. Finally, inserting my grandfather’s portrait into the work is to relate and remind myself of my identity as a member of the third generation of Chinese diaspora, as well as to examine this process in a personal context.
