Haha that's very kind. I'm not too pleased with this painting, but it's great to see that others feel different about it. The brand of the paper is Canson Montval 300g/mΒ².

I like the nostalgic and at the same time calm feeling of this one. And,as mentioned above, your work on the grass and trees is so impressive,so realistic-looking,that at first, when browsing through your gallery,i thought this was a photograph.
Congratulations for your work, you're very talented.

I think that this is one of your best paintings up to date. The grass looks so silky-smooth that one just wants to take a nap in it and the details on the trees are rather amazing. I also like it that there seems to be a heavy history weighing on this country while at the same time there is such peace, that shepherds can look after their flock of sheep without fearing that they would get attacked. I find it interesting that you put a much heavier emphasis on this rather brutal seeming past (or should I use the word glorious instead of brutal?).

And finally: I admire you watercolour skills in general! I could never do something like this.

Thanks very much! I think it is a brutal past as it's meant to be a reference to the really brutal 30 years war.

God, you're good.
I admire the vibrant colours you have on your paintings, it's just not clear to me how you can achieve this effect with watercolour - anytime I try more intensive colour it became "muddy" and just ugly

alarie-tano In reply to LucieOn [2008-08-29 09:59:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Perhaps it's because of your colors. I can put layer above layer without the colors getting "muddy".

I'm using Schmincke's watercolours in tubes... they're supposed to be good The mistake is more probably in my painting technique

Oh yeah they are good, I have them, too. Though I don't use them very often. Mostly I use 'Ecoline' from Talens.

I know them - those are the liquid colours in the bottles, right? I never thought about using them for watercolour painting, I always thought they're more like an ink I guess I was wrong

alarie-tano In reply to LucieOn [2008-08-30 10:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's those. They are like ink, but they are water-soluble.

alarie-tano In reply to Crooty [2008-08-06 08:07:51 +0000 UTC]

Actually the relief is a mixture of several famous artworks: in the front the standing angel is from François Rude's relief for the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and all the riders and horses are actually sketches from Leonardo

Your watercolours always amaze me . You're so skillfull especially with that them.
I'd like to ask the same thing that ~wosan already asked. That grass (and the trees) are unbelievably realistic. Did you use masking fluid to create the lighter parts or... how? It would be great if you have time to anwer, but if you answer to ~wosan , you don't need to copy & paste the information, I can read it from there

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

alarie-tano In reply to mivva [2008-08-05 16:12:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!
I answered ~wosan 's and your question about the grass at wosan's comment.

Now about the trees:
Each leave is painted separately, though in the end I could have painted bigger parts with a wider brush, I just didn't want to risk losing the breakthroughs of the background through the leaves (In fact I had much more of those in the beginning and deleted them in the end). First in a quite bright and much diluted hue, then another layer with darker hues and finally one with dark gray. The most difficult part is to make it look three dimensional (I'm not totally happy about that in this picture). As the leaves did look a bit too turbulent in some areas I went over those areas with a wider, medium wet brush to harmonize the different tints a bit.
Masking fluid would have worked as well, but you get very hard edges with it, so in this case I would have preferred this technique anyways, even if I had brushes left.

I hope that was useful. Feel free to ask again.

mivva In reply to alarie-tano [2008-08-06 13:39:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, it's very useful. I hadn't even thought about that it would be possible to do grass in the way you do it... It's great to learn something new once in a while. Now I should go and paint and try out some of those techniques.
Thank you very much for such a detailed answer. I surely will (ask again)
