Very nice painting! The contrast is nice, as is the composition. The shading is smooth too, it gives his skin a slightly reflective look that looks awesome. And it's very true to the model!
What software did you use? What brushes? How long did you spend on this painting? Pardon my questions, I'm trying to learn the basics of digital painting myself ^^

Thank you! I tried to pick out a picture with double lighting to try and understand planes of the face a bit more.
This took about 3.5 hours with revising (his ear & left eye gave me a ton of trouble!) I use Photoshop CS5-- I can't recall where my brushes came from but I used an airbrush-like tool, a textured pastel-like tool, and another textured pastel-like tool with more of a hard edge than the first one. I reduce flow to 50% to show more grain/texture in the brush and sometimes I lower opacity to 60-70% to build up layers in a more natural way... usually I depend mostly on my pen pressure, though.
