Description Old gardens often had a special atmosphere, since there were only few flowers with striking colors (usually from annual plants), and useful plants were combined with the merely decorative ones. In many cases, those gardens were in an almost perfect balance between being well-kept and a tad neglected, since the amount of time spent in the gardens depended on how much time was left over for them. So, plants that used to spread by seeds in a controlled way, such as columbine, sweet william, or annual honesty, wandered through the garden and left little blurs of colors here and there, even between herbs and in the vegetable patches, thus producing charming pictures - like in the photo, where an old-fashioned columbine had sown itself among chives.

Lovely story, Kevin!
So it is eatable?

Β Yes and no. Leaves and flowers of chives add a garlic-like but much milder taste to a lot of recipes. Columbine plants are very poisonous, although the "flowers of various species of columbine were consumed in moderation by Native Americans as a condiment with other fresh greens, and are reported to be very sweet, and safe if consumed in small quantities", as Wikipedia stated. I guess I won't dare to check this out, however.
