Description
This is Polyxena longituba. Polyxena is a genus of South African bulbous plants from the family Hyacinthaceae, thus related to hyacinths and squills. They are small and very easy to cultivate, and every year in autumn, they are reliably producing their fragrant and pretty flowers in masses, after a dry summer dormancy. I guess they are hardy in all regions with a Mediterranean climate, such as SoCal. In other regions, greenhouses, winter gardens or bulb frames are sufficient, provided they are kept almost frost-free.
Polyxena is named after the beautiful Trojan princess from Greek mythology, Πολυξένη. Full size view, please!

The natural color scheme out here is grey and brown. Many flowers just dry up in the burning sun. The LA basin is just a desert surrounded by mountains. I don't remember the last time we had rain; maybe April? Our temperature inversions and micro climates are fascinating. We get LA weather(which is always wrong). They may have rain, but we have sun all day. I think these plants would do well up around Santa Barbara. Orange County can get very hot.
