Description My part for the which was tons of fun. I got 's character Rayliff for this. I was pretty intimidated considering the level of submissions for this exchange, everyone is amazing. Unfortunately I decided to try doing greyscale to colour (despite having started in colour) which is something that I'm not at all used to, and I struggled quite a bit applying the colour correctly, especially with Ray's markings. So yeah, the colours didn't come out at all how I'd imagined them, and the lack of certain markings on Ray, and the hair on her tail (they're actually there, just practically invisible) was more a result of my incompetence than any sort of carelessness. So my deepest apologies for that.
Over all though I think I'm happy with it, despite the terrible markings, and uncontrollable colour Critiques on methods, composition, anatomy, colour usage, whatever you can think of though would be very much appreciated!

I think you did fairly well on the markings. They were fairly complicated anyway. Looks cool to me!

THIS IS SO COOL! I LOVE the colors you used for this! The pretty darkened clouds with all those little splooshes of color look so neat! I love the way the clouds are warm and the water is cool! AND THEN THE RAIN DROPS ARE BOTH. WHAT THE HELL. IT'S AMAZING. Who thinks of making rain drops COLORS???? THAT'S SO NEAT!!! I love how Rays colors go with the colors in the BG as well. Lord it ties the whole piece together so very nicely. AWESOME job with this!

Ooh nice! I like the colors on the character a lot. I think the grayscale method gives a drawing much more depth than if you would use colors right away, I like that. Personal question: do you like bad weather? Like sometimes you like to walk in the rain or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Amadoodles In reply to Vithsiny [2013-06-02 09:43:55 +0000 UTC]

Uhh bad weather is variable. If im not at home I hate it because the thunder storms can fry my pc. Also if I'm trying to use my computer and when a storm comes by I have to unplug it. But if its late when I'm trying to sleep, then i usually sleep amazingly well during them
I don't usually walk in the rain though, too much hail and stuff often >_<
And thanks! They greyscale can give more depth, but my mind works with colours, so I struggle to apply them in the more artificial way that this method requires.

Vithsiny In reply to Amadoodles [2013-06-02 21:23:36 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm,.. I barely unplug my pc anymore when there is a thunderstorm. Then again, thunderstorms in The Netherlands won't scare you, and most high buildings here have lightning rods I think.
I always sleep straight through thunderstorms, they don't even wake me up, not even heavy ones in Austria with echoing within two mountains.
The best feeling I got walking in pretty heavy rain was when I was wearing swimming pants and everyone else was running like hell to stay dry in their clothes (and it was still quite warm outside). I didn't think there would be much hail in South Africa.
So, the method requires some practice, that's not new to you I guess . I believe you'll get the hang of it.

D: but its going to get fried! I don't know how many people I know who've had their electronics fried by the power surges in storms. I think my paranoia is justified at least

Oh no, we get some serious thunderstorms, id doesn't even need to be raining for one to happen And yeah, it hails here quite a bit, we had hail the size of golf balls (and bigger) coming down few months ago. Although that thank god isn't the norm.

Vithsiny In reply to Amadoodles [2013-06-03 19:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Don't feed my paranoia please! Oh well,.. I live near a large tower that belongs to the Dutch weather forecast station, so I guess I'm out of harms way.

It's really nice btw, they always say what the weather in "De Bilt" is, because the meteorological institute is there, and it's nextdoor, so then I know exactly what weather it is at my house

DemonML [2013-05-31 16:07:14 +0000 UTC]

Im glad that you used her to experiment ^w^ Her pose is so unique and really adds to the movement and tone of the image. You tied it really well into the background with the dark clouds and bolt of lightening, with Ray on her feet like that it adds tension or suspense as that is an unnatural pose for a quadruped it makes one wonder why she would need to stand up like that.
Excuse me if im looking too much into this but this really is a beautiful piece (even if it didn't come out the way you wanted) and conveys emotion and mood very well. Thank you so much for doing this, its so lovely!

I'm really really happy that you like it. And thanks so much for the comment! I usually try not to experiment too much if its for other people as you never know if it'll be amazing or a complete disaster But I'm really happy you like it, I had a lot of fun doing it, Rays a very fun character.

Sky-Shifter [2013-05-31 14:00:45 +0000 UTC]

I really like the colors on this one. I like how the overall darkness of the piece really draws you into some f the key features, and then how those features are really bright. It's an interesting effect!

Amadoodles In reply to Sky-Shifter [2013-06-02 18:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Fluffysminion [2013-05-31 12:41:48 +0000 UTC]

I really like the saturated colours here, the sky/water contrast I feel works really well. It is a bit dark but that's not all bad, it does add to the luminosity and the atmosphere. Ray does blend with the background a bit but I think it would be worse if she stood out much more, as it is she looks very much in scene. For your first attempt at this sort of style I think it's brilliant

Amadoodles In reply to Fluffysminion [2013-06-02 18:19:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Fluffy! its only now that I remembered how different monitors also display things at different brightness levels, and so just how dark this could be appearing to some people ;A;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fluffysminion In reply to Amadoodles [2013-06-06 21:18:09 +0000 UTC]

No problem! That does complicate things, it is odd to think how the same thing must look different on different screens, I guess that's one problem with dark digital art, it's more likely to be affected by that sort of thing.
