XDDD Yes, she has freaking purple hair and pink eyes! Sorry for posting crappy OC drawings, but I was considering joining a contest and I drew a couple of sketches... and I'd like to get some critique on my bad drawings as well.
I randomly showed the lineart version of this to my mother. I showed her a bunch of character drawings by different people and asked her opinion about them, so she didn't know one of them was mine. (That's the way I usually try to get HONEST critique from her, har har. XDD) She said it was the worst of all the pics and it looked absolutely horrible!! Epic fail, lawl... XDDD;;; Well, I guess she's right. I'll never be a character designer, hehe.
About the character: Her name is Iris, she's 16 and she's a weird hyper girl. She's extremely outgoing, talkative and curious. She lost her parents in war when she was little. (Yay! Cliche!
) She tries to make a living from temporary jobs, like cleaning, working as a waitress/hostess, baby-sitting, etc. She's actually waiting for a chance to be able to leave her boring hometown. 8DI kinda want to make a short manga parody with my stupid OCs! Lol! 8D

well honestly... Your manga drawing are bit plain. But I wonder what other drawings you showed your mother. I bet it came from fairly talented people if yours stood out as the worst.
Seriously yours is not that bad! I've seen tons of OCs, I can tell. Though your style is a bit plain, you at least use YOUR OWN style, that can't be sad about a lot of other people (including me).
I find the clothes you put on her fairly original (though I hate the colours but I guess it fits her description). In most aspects, she is clichΓ© yes. But again, this is not nearly the worst I've seen.
But for god's sake Sivie! Purple hair and pink eyes?! XD I thought we agreed that was a big no-no? Fancy colours and weird fysical traits don't make up for a cool character, a good story and personality does. Look at roy from fma, he's sorta plain himself. Yet we like him! Why is that?
conclusion: Try to make your style more interesting by adding specific recogniseable elements (the faces in fma, the eyes and clothes in naruto, the sharp faces in bleach, the eyes in kenshin,...) and make sure not all your characters look the same once you remove the colours, hair and clothes (again I have the same problem). Think about what makes characters from your favourite series so cool and try to use that nformation.

Naaah, I showed her drawings by some of my DA pals, who are at about the same level as me, I think.
Actually, I don't even think I have an "own style" yet.
Haha! Yeah, but I think it's good if a character is somewhat eye-catching. Some people say looks doesn't mean anything, but it actually means a lot! Just take a look at Naruto or Bleach characters, each of them has their unique physical traits. Sakura's hair is pink and Ichigo's is orange! 8D
Specific recogniseable elements... hmm... hmm. Okay, I'll try, though I'm not sure how I could do that.

Yeah you're right... Most popular anime/manga today have a set of crazy lookng characters. But not all great manga are like that. You just mentioned monster in your journal, now those guys looks plain but they're all barking mad so they'll still be interesting. anyways you should make your characters so that you yourself would find them interesting. I don't think just fysical treats do the trick for you (or am I wrong?).
well, just experiment with it a bit...
XD you might acctually be right about that! Most manga characters do look too much alike without their special traits but it's still best to avoid it (I'm trying to find a good example but I haven't found one yet).
I like the sharp faces in bleach too XD face shapes, eyes and the way to draw the hair are things you can change to get a more orginal style, try some stuff out.

You know, if you have a strong, specific style, it's kinda difficult to avoid some characters turning out similar, because they will all have the specific traits, which make them recognizeable as your style.
Yeah, I know, it's not all about physical traits. But I don't have any serious manga or whatever story making ambitions, I'm just having fun with the designs of the characters. I'm considering making some short parody, though, based on clichΓ©s.

Nah, I'm not creative enough. Sometimes I think it'd be better if I worked together with other people, who'd give me the ideas. A DA friend of mine already told me he has a story for a comic, but I don't want to start any big projects till I don't feel confident enough at drawing comic-ish stuff (+ I don't have time). I do have some short oneshot things about my OCs, though, but those aren't that great...

yeah I was thinking of doing a oneshot too... oneshots are a good way of starting things. You should draw them and see what happens.

Great design. She looks like the designs you find in video games. Love the clothes. Most adults, like your mom, would probably not like it because it is so different then what they are used to seeing. But she could use some more shading on the skin.

Yeah! Actually, I did the shading on this super quickly using just a dark gray and white, then blending the shades a bit more by picking colours with the eyedropper tool and painting with a very low opacity brush.

My mom stopped asking a long time ago, though, and only occasionally wants to see my work. Be grateful that yours cares so much about what you make. It means she cares about you, in an... odd, tweaky sort of way.
