I was very interested to read in a British newspaper a few years ago that a British female disc jockey had been "weaned off her medication by her doctor". Only if I saw an epileptologist would I want my medication changed, and seeing as I was discharged from going to out-patient appointments at my local hospital in 2000, I don't think that is going to happen. I would not have been discharged if the medications I have been on since 1982 (though the daily amount has not always been the same) had been "unhelpful".

Well, hopefully you have learnt sufficient about it not to say anything stupid - because (having it myself) I know people do.

Yes. Having dealt with it first hand... literally... I wince at the jokes and the stigma surrounding seizures. Still, we make jokes about it just because we'd be miserable if we didn't. But we're not ignorant, and there is so much ignorance out there. Kind of the inspiration for this piece.

Actually, I don't find any disability funny so I would find it hard to do a joke about epilepsy. You may be interested to learn that an actress put on a "one-woman" show at a theatre not far from where I live, and stopped taking her epilepsy medication for a while beforehand, in the hope she would actually have a seizure during the show - and if that is not horrible, I don't know what is. Whether she did, I'm not concerned; the fact she gave up her medication for a while is.

I don't find disabilities funny.
In her family (my friend) laughter is one of the things that keeps them going. I can sometimes be very shocked by the jokes made. She calls herself "stroke-o" and her son told her that "It was great! we put a hat out on the ground and made a ton of money!" (while she was having a seizure.) Of COURSE they totally understand the seriousness of seizures, but they mask it with humor. It's just one way some people handle things in life.
I don't really understand how the actress relates, or what her intentions were. I can understand, however, the longing to give up medications... especially if those medications prove unhelpful.
