Unicorns have unicorn magic, earth ponies have earth pony magic and  pegasi have pegasi magic.

If you consider using magic cheating, than would not it mean that Applejack who use her earth pony strength and stamina during physical competitions also cheating ?

Well, that is a valid point. Still, it's like saying that a fight between a guy with an assault rifle and a guy with a BB gun is fair because they both have guns.

It is not Twilight's fault that her magic is far more powerful than Applejack's magic.

If Twilight would face Big Mac, she would have hard time to overpower Big Mac strength ( she would win, but not so easy ).

So your solution is that if you can not take guns from both of them, you take the stronger gun, leaving one person defenceless, it is even more unfair than letting them both keep their guns.

I wondered if that was the case. Her smile seemed a little too bit. She does have a tendency to use magic even when Applejack says it isn't allowed. I guess she learned nothing from Winter Wrap-Up.

Rarity used magic as well during  Winter Wrap-Up.

Also, Twilight screwed up in there only because of the plot, but I see no reason why Twilight who is master in magic to screw up a spell, it make no sense.
