This is a good concept. I particularly liked the road texture that you found and how it runs through the door way and over the landscape.

There is a good sense of depth, but it would have been nice to have seen more of a illusion of space by exaggerating the rules of atmospheric perspective. Example, you can have the closest figure larger, maybe only showing the the legs. Then as they go towards the background, there is room to place more that get smaller and smaller until they reach the horizon.

I also think it would be nice to see a little bit more going on. Not to take away from the model, but something that is completely different for more variety.

Lastly, you may want to bring out more hair detail on the most forward figures. Right now, each figure has flat hair. The rule is that detail is lost as the object go towards the background, and right now it's flat on every girl.

I hope this helped. You have a very good idea, I just feel that it can be pushed a little further. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Absolutely brilliant image, love it so much, If Magritte was alive today he would give you a hug and take you out for a fancy meal to say thank you, I'd do the same but i don't have the money, so i just add it to my favs, and future works to buy list when i am a millionaire. Fantastic tribute one of the greatest surrealists of all time and one of my personal favourite artists of all time.

I've heard of raining cats and dogs, but never raining little girls! Interesting choice to make one of them red with a different position, it adds some interest. Good job and good luck!

Lovely concept, instead of rain with waterdrops it is raining umbrella girls. Absolutely like the one girl with the umbrella to the side. Well done.

Awesome! I love the idea, and the one girl in red. I do agree that a little more variety with the others might spice up the image a bit--but I don't know how many stock images there are of dark-haired people dressed in white holding white umbrellas over their heads.

annewipf In reply to BookLyrm [2012-05-09 16:25:16 +0000 UTC]

Not many. There is another reason why the white girls are all the same: for this picture I was inspired by the artwork of René Magritte, the famous Belgian surrealist artist who painted a lot of similar men with a black suit and a black bowler hat, sometimes holding black umbrellas over their heads... (I didn't find an example on the web with the umbrellas, but here is an example of these men [link] ). In some of his paintings, one man was a bit different from the others, it gave me the idea of the one girl in red. Thank you!

Thanks for the link! I have to admit, I know very little about art history. I think I appreciate what you were going for a lot better now!

You're welcome. If you like surrealism, I may recommend to you to get a look in the web to the artwork of the big masters of surrealism: Salvador Dali and René Magritte, of course, but Jean Arp, Hans Bellmer , Victor Brauner, Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, André Kertesz, André Masson, Joan Miró, Meret Oppenheim, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Kurt Seligmann, Yves Tanguy and Raoul Ubac too. You may learn a lot from them.
