Description Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain: Two fantastic characters who were even better together, and unfortunately two of the characters DC has recently decided to completely screw over in their comics. Stephanie was not only tortured to death, but blamed for the deaths of hundreds first, while Batgirl has been inexplicably written completely opposite of everything she believed in and stood for through her whole existence. It's enough to get me to stop buying DC books. No, seriously.

I love these two characters. In fact, there will be more art/comics featuring them in the future. This actually ran at The Wotch [link] as a filler comic, cause at the time I could not get it out of my head.

I still support these two characters. I think DC missed huge potential in shoving these two off to the side to make room for Batwoman Kathy"Hi! I'm a lesbian and have no other reason to exist!" Kane.

If I had the time, I'd write a DCU tangent universe comic called "Batgirls" that stared these two together.

I encourage you to check out Steph and Cass' comic appearances (pre-War Games and pre-OYL). I also encourage you to voice your support or fondness of these characters not just online, but to the big wigs at DC themselves. These two deserved better than Didio's crap.

Both were returned... only to be screwed AGAIN by having Cass uncharacteristically dump all she swore to uphold for the sake of being written out be replaced by Steph as Batgirl. Why was this gesture done, one asks? Because after Bruce's "death" the genius-in-chief, Didio, believed that Cassandra was unrelatable and therefore no one had any interest in the character(what fanbase was he getting this idea from? himself probably) while people would relate more to Stephanie as Batgirl. News flash, Didiot? Cass doesn't HAVE to be relatable to be interesting(Batman sure as hell isn't relatable (who else can boast being a master of numerous martial arts, sciences, forensics, detective work, and engineering plus have a gigantic trust fund to back it all?) but we still love him), and you made Steph LESS relatable by making her no longer have to work for anything she's got which is now all handed to her by the wayne trust fund. Plus, Cass and Steph have since been left separate. It's as if Didio is intentionally trying to destroy Batman from within...

I haven't read alot of Batman comics but I've been getting into DC recently and I must say it seems like a shame that they screwed up such a cool duo, Steph's alive again and the new batgirl while Cassi is good again but has gone off to parts unknown....weird huh?

Excellent pic of them together though

Spoiler or Stephanie Brown did not die in War Games Part III. The doctor at the hostipal faked her death by overdosing another woman patient who looked a bit like Stephanie. Then, when everybody (Batman family and Black Mask) thought and confirmed that Spoiler was dead, the doctor brought Steph to Africa when she recovered from her torture wounds. Steph later came back to Gotham as the Spoiler (Duh!) and confirmed to the Batman family that she didn't die!

It appears DC brought both back, and like you, I'm glad for it. I don't mind characters dying, as long as it serves some sort of purpose. Both Stephanie's death and Cassandra's switch to the other side seemed forced I'm wondering if bringing them back was in response to readers being pissed or if it was planned all along...

atleast Cass is in the outsiders being a hero again.

it seams like Spoiler might comeback.......then again it could be someone else in the suit.

Amazing image. Very well done. It sucks what happened to these two characters....especially Stephanie. Didio continues to be an *** in how he responds to questions about her at conventions...here's hoping Dixon does a better job of honoring her memory when he takes over Robin again.

SQUEEEE!! Spoiler and Batgirl!! ^o^ in cartoon form! How cute! God, this makes my heart ache something bad! I miss them SOOO MUCH! ;O; Darnit, they're wonderful! I love the comradeship/friendship there. *sniffles* Why? WHY? there was so much potential for them?!

Dude, I friggin' dropped DC when they turned Cass into a crazy bond villainess. O_o; The Spoiler thing irritated me sooo much! When she became Robin, I JUST KNEW they were going to kill her off or ruin her character in some way. It just always happens that way. I just knew it. (even wrote a journal entry about it) But I was still willing to give them a second chance after that. But no, screwing with Cass's character was the last straw for me. I haven't bought anything from DC since that Robin issue. (actually the one before, I couldn't make myself buy the one where she's revealed).

I wish all Batgirl fans had done the same as me. Ya know, hit the company where it hurts the most, (their wallets). But hey! At least they caught a clue with all the protest and realized she was a popular character. Now I'm just biting my nails, waiting to see how she's going to reappear in that Gotham Underground comic due in November. T-T waah, I'm so scared! I fear bad writing so much! ;o;

I couldn't agree with you more, Annie13. A Batgrrls or some such title would have kept me reading DC. Oh well. I love your tribute. Spoiler was exactly as you described and the sort of heroine we need more of. Here's my take on a new Spoiler in script form.

Um...this is kind of an akward question, but didn't one of them get horribly tortured and then refused medical care, then die while Batman was arguing with the doctor?

Can I just say, awesome! Thank you so much for this and I too wholly support that Didio is an idiot who just hates the Cass and Steph goodness! Best buddies and seriously they should have been the next Birds of Prey!
I hold out the hope that now (that the multiverse is back) That Steph and Cass will exist on earth 12 or something. More power to you!

Form what I've read, an explanation has been given for Cassandra's strange behavior in the latest Teen Titans, so I hope you feel better about that at least.

(GARGH I WANNA BUY DC COMICS! WHY ME POOR?)

Annie13 In reply to Hydragon [2007-02-01 18:32:52 +0000 UTC]

I do...for now. There's still room to mess it up, or shoehorn a new "plausible" explanation because of it. (though it'd only be plausible because of the original mistakes, which in my mind makes it not plausible).

IN SHORT: I'm happy with the explanation put forth so far. We'll see if it continues on the right track in the next few months.

Unfortunatly I was never a big fan of DC comics, more of a Marvel Man myself (I mean when they made a hot female clone of Spider-man in their ultimate line but still thinks she's a boy, you just KNOW they're onto something good and if you haven't been reading that story line I suggest you pick up a copy, you won't be disappointed. )

I have to admit they both sound like interesting characters though from Spoilers name it makes me think she goes around, hiding in the shadows of movie theaters and comic stores and leaping out just as people buy their tickets for a movie then she leaps out and tells them the ending of it.

Regarding Spoiler's codename: back when the character was introduced in the early '90s, the internet wasn't big yet and the term "spoiler" in its current context of giving away plot twists didn't exist or at least wasn't well known. Her name's very appropriate for her original mission of sending Batman clues to what her father (a Riddler-wannabe called Cluemaster who was cured of his need to send clues to his heists by a prison shrink) was planning.

Still, with how the use of the word has changed and her father being out of the picture, I'm not sure it still fits. Perhaps when she's brought back from the dead in a few years (I can hope, right?) she'll pick a new one.

So Didio's the bastard who ruined them? It's like my sister says "follow writers, not characters," because if you read comics about any character no matter who's writing them, you'll be deeply disappointed. These two were heroines; they deserved better than this. Besides, wasn't Batwoman supposed to have been murdered ages ago in DC Comics?

I liked the picture back then, and I still like it now. The batwoman concept didn't really appeal to me either. If you're serious about writing the Batgirls comic [and I learn to multitask], I wouldn't mind drawing it for you.
