"Why hello! Down here!"
Lucy smiled at the odd woman, who was sat on the floor, instead of the big leather chair. She sat crosslegged like the arabian snake charmers in her Daddy's Books and was just as magic. She was small but her eyes twinkled like tiny stars when she smiled at Lucy.
The woman gestured a small paw at the big squishy leather chairs by the fire. Lucy chose the snakey green one with the lion feet which seemed to move in the firelight. Mum had to help her up, she felt so tired nowadays. She felt Mum place a hand on her shoulder and sit on the arm of the chair. She watched as the lady on the floor arranged herself so that she faced both the fire and Lucy. It made the shadows on her face move oddly and her eyes gleam. She turned to her.
"Well hello Lucy and welcome to my school! Your name is Lucy, right? My name is Viola Vance, a mouthful really so everybody calls me VeeVee" the woman called VeeVee smiled again, showing small even teeth.
"Ive heard alot about you from your mum. How old are you Lucy?"
It took lucy a moment to arrange her fingers. "Five!" Lucy stopped and checked her fingers, just to be sure. "Five." she said again, with a nod.
"I see, well Lucy, at my school I dont often take anyone under 13 for a special reason, which your Mum knows. But she asked me to see you anyway and Im very glad, you seem to be a very special girl." She paused for a moment and looked at Lucy, really hard and twisted her head to the side. "Whats wrong with you Lucy darling?"
Lucy was confused. Wrong? She wondered for a moment if she had dirt on her face and was about to ask when Mum spoke. One word.
Can-sir.
Oh, that. Can-sir. She meant that. Last september Mum had said she was very ill and had to see a doctor. Lucy didnt remember much of it. She remembered hurting and bright flashing lights and her throat forever burning and the bright white porcelain of the toilet. She remembered.
She put a hand to her head and felt the bandana Mum had put on. It was bright and cheerful and hid the round emptyness of the head. Lucy remembered Mum crying when one morning, she woke her up and when Lucy had sat up, most of her hair still lay on the pillow. She didnt cry. She was rather fascinated by it really and remebered the lcok of hair she had kept secret, away from Mum in her jewelry box, soft and silky. A remembering.
Lucy felt mum's hand clench on her shoulder and she realised that mum and VeeVee had been talking. Mum's face was rather red and her eyes were shiny and wet. VeeVee still sat on the floor, unmoving except for the drak shadows dancing across her face. It changed the small pale face completely and scared Lucy a little.
Mum stopped suddenly, breathing heavily, as if she had been running. She took her hand off Lucy and took her in both hands, pulling her onto her lap and clinging tightly, like Lucy did her bear. Lucy felt something soak through her bandana and held onto her.
Through the curtains of mum's honey hair, she saw the small woman stand up and face the fire. She stood, staring. So quiet too, Lucy could not hear her breath. Then she turned, the shadows still darting about her face, flickering and flitting. The woman smiled sadly and laid a hand on Mum's shoulder.
"Okay" said VeeVee the shadow lady and waited until mum had unfolded from Lucy before kneeling before her.
"Lucy, before you can join my school, you need to answer a question for me...Okay?"
Lucy nodded, fingers gripping onto her mums tearstained tee-shirt.
The shadows danced across the womans face and her eyes twinkled, though merrily or menacingly, Lucy couldnt tell. The woman ran her tounge nervously across her white, so white, teeth.
"Do you know what a vampire is?"
