Did you start with a digital sketch or a traditional one?
Or no sketch, and you just jumped in with flat colors?

Flat colors, exactly as it can be seen in the progression above. It helps if you keep things which are clearly detached from the elements behind them (such as the girls and the bus doors) on separate layers, so you can move them around, resize or erase parts of them without affecting the image underneath.
