with the same blue cup
i water the plants

& look out at the rain.

a thin stray
is starving around her enormous eyes

walking quickly between puddles.
she passes beneath the window

& is for a moment
the only thing that really exists.

once she is out of sight

the day sinks into the walls
disappears behind the delicate mouth of the cat

then calculates all that had filled it
& closes its eyes.

sometimes there is too much narrowness,
too much bitter space.

i hold my empty blue cup
& think about

pieces of the world
that never quite make a whole world.

all that might be done
if just decided upon.

what i learn
vs. what i regret.

the plants shiver,
peer down into their wet pots.

the stray is gone.
the rain seems endless.

if only i had put down

my cup.
