Description I was taking some pictures in the local gardens yesterday when this Pukeko turned up and hung around. Probably hoping for something to eat I'd say.

This one's quite cute.
We have some similar birds here around, but they're pretty shy and almost never come close to people, even in winter when food
is much harder to find. The ducks though, are a different case. Those can be rather clingy if they know you've food for them.

They're very common here - they're seen often on roads eating the road chips as they help with their digestive system!
He he - here you can got to the parks and the ducks and geese will come right to you as they think you will feed them!

Yeah I'm not surprised! Β We see them mostly near the roads and I only found out a little while ago that it's because they like to eat the gravel! Β I've never had one check me out like this one did (he came to within 6 feet of me) so it was a new experience too!

Very interesting and unusual animal - Pukeko, right?! Oh if only all the gardens were so interesting and full of amazing creatures! It's like hens in my region, do you have any there? Wow they eat gravel?! No, hens usually eat wheat or some dust from the roads Β
