Description Chris ran her fingers over the hunting knife at her belt and observed the gaunt, knobbly creature shambling through the trees.

"I could fight that." she mused. The instant the words left her mouth, the creature turned its sickly yellow gaze on her and then vanished.

"See, this is why I don't take you camping anymore." Micah said. "You don't fight Hidebehinds. The best you can do is convince them that your family will call down the North Wind if they eat you."

As he said this, he aimed at particularly wild grin just over Chris's shoulder. Chris felt a hot breath, then a rush of air, and when she turned, there was nothing but trees.

"Whatever, man." She playfully slugged her companion's arm. "You're just afraid that if I start a tussle with Fearsome Critters, you'll get bloodstains on your sheepskin coat."

"Well," Micah relented, "There is that."

Ok, so, this was an accident. I was practicing drawing faces, and Micah came out looking so wild and crazy that I burst out laughing just looking at him. So then I had to draw Chris. And then, because one is a folkloric Fearsome Critter, I had to reference another classic: the great Hidebehind.

...so the hidebehind is a real thing? For a given definition of real that is. These characters are getting more and more interesting.

In these stories, it probably will be, anyway! I've always loved the folklore (or rather, fakelore) of America. You know, Paul Bunyan, the "Fearsome Critters" (they have a whole page to themselves on tvtropes) like Hidebehinds (first introduced to me in the McBroom books), Tailypo, Hodag, Splinter-Cat, etc.

I may end up splitting this into a separate universe to keep the fantasy elements and aliens/spaceships elements apart though. Otherwise, I'd sort of be copying you, wouldn't I?

Eh, science fantasy is a well established genre by now. Just follow your muse I suppose

Well, I suppose so. I'll just have to stick to fakelore Critters and keep clear of actual well-established mythological types
