Gently I lowered my hand to Aneko. I felt a little bad for laughing at her when she was clearly very serious about helping me. But there's just something about someone only a few inches high to you acting with such conviction and purpose for your cause that seems silly.

I didn't want her to worry so much about it. I'd long given up the search for who I was, I really had no memories before meeting...him. Those memories were where I went to for solace, I hadn't thought about this kind of stuff in a long long time. In a way it was like opening an old wound. More than enough time had passed to make the wound more of a scratch at this point but it made an opening to let my mind wander.

My eyes caught a glimmer of light off the cuffs on my wrist. Sometimes I wasn't sure if I even wanted to know about my past. What had I done to need these? Who'd put these on me? There might be things I didn't want the answers to, but there were things I did. Knowing about who I was before might not have been something I wanted to know, but knowing what I was... I wanted that. I really did. The things we do, they don't define us forever, right? Our sins can be forgiven and we can become better people even if we've done bad things. But what about what we are? Our true nature of being? We can't change what we are, can we?

Aneko didn't need to know of my turbulent thoughts. She just needed to know that I appreciated her offer. I had no idea how or if she'd be able to help but the offer and her just being here had meaning. In this moment that's what I wanted her to know. I couldn't quite put those feelings into words but I wanted her to know that, and I hoped I'd be able to show that.
