Description This was the view from the hotel in which we stayed in Kandersteg, Switzerland right in the middle of the village. Hard to beat. The Kander Valley is very narrow so the view from the dining room of the hotel is that of the Birre mountain. The entire area is just breathtakingly beautiful. With the fresh snowfall it was a veritable Winter Wonderland. Note the chute of snow to the left of the peak. It almost looks like a waterfall--these peaks are so steep, it's hard for the snow to stick to them so you often get "snowfalls" like this.

Thanks for finding that! We'd just had our avalanche safety session with the Scouts the prior Monday night to this event (the Klondike Derby is held up there every year). And they all know, those who have been before, that there are avalanches up the mountainsides a lot. It is just so steep on some of those slopes---doesn't take much snow to cause it to fall down because of its own weight. Which is what happened here. When it's fresh and powdery, this is the effect. When it's a full fledged avalanche, the the snow is compacted into bricks of ice that are as hard as cement. Scary stuff, so prevention is definitely the way to go!
