Description
I am working through the Chinese Zodiac, taking a conservation approach by featuring endangered animals and environments. Next year, 2024, is “Year of the Dragon”, so I wanted to feature a species that was reminiscent of this mythological reptile. The crocodile fits this description perfectly!
In Hindu mythology, the gharial is the vehicle of gods and goddesses. It is one of the largest species of crocodiles, reaching up to 20 feet and one of the most distinctive because of its long snout. Unfortunately, the gharial is at risk of extinction, with less than a thousand adults remaining.
Also included in the painting is the Golden Mahseer, an endangered freshwater fish found in India. This “tiger among fish” faces habitat loss and over-fishing. In this painting, the two ancient and illusive beasts are swimming in a field of lotus blossoms and stars.
I hope that this work serves as reverence for endangered species and an incentive to pursue better habits and practices for planet earth.
