Description Just a bunch of Cyan drawings from an old sketchbook I was looking through today. I particularly like the fuming!cyan in the upper right. That was from a story I had started writing a while ago, I'm not sure what happened to the manuscript (that's what happens when you've got about seven computers in your house, plus a couple of external hard drives).

For the uninformed, Cyan is the character I use to portray The Stranger (the player) from the "Myst" series of computer games.

I love Cyan’s design! He’s so cute and sweet-looking and different (in a good way!). I like the little chibi comic in the corner too. Wonder if Atrus got it from one of those midway game stands when he took Catherine out on a date once or something.

What kind of a nerdy game stand would THAT have been, giving away that kind of awesome sciency-looking bricabrac? I want to visit that carnival...

No, someone stole it and used it as flair. I don't mind, but I would have appreciated some sort of... note? Oh well. The worse thing is that someone took a picture of a squee that I did as part of a commission and used that as flair. Someone else actually paid for that picture, so they definitely should have been asked first!

Cyan looks like He's somewhere between 15-17, but He's actually caught in a personal time bubble that keeps Him from aging beyond that. That way I can draw comics about the whole series of games without changing his looks.

You start the game by causing the problem that'll take you the rest of the game to fix. This you accomplish by putting a certain piece of mysterious crystal under a certain beam of particles or something.

Top right expression is perfect for my experience with the dreaded 'spider chair of Spire.'

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artoveli In reply to hpholo [2009-03-03 19:13:06 +0000 UTC]

It's far more angsty than it looks, I'm afraid. In this particular case, Cyan was just feeling rather depressed/homesick/lonely/under-appreciated... he'd had a bad evening and he was just letting himself feel this way because he was alone. He knows that Atrus and Catherine appreciate him, he just needed to vent a little in an empty house.

...or was it an empty house? That night Cyan gets kidnapped!

I've got to find that manuscript.

JakeHowler [2009-02-27 12:05:33 +0000 UTC]

wow, Cyan has grown up. He looks more mature in these pics. You know, I loved how he looks in these pics (Specially the upper-middle one).

But to be honest, I like him more with the younger look from before. The way he appears here would be his visual in End of Ages, I think

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artoveli In reply to JakeHowler [2009-02-27 12:42:19 +0000 UTC]

Remember that Cyan is a lot older than he looks, in any picture. It's that personal time-bubble of his keeping him with the same looks. Perhaps he doesn't look older, just more mature in those top pictures...

But also, these were drawn a while ago, in a different sketchbook than the one I've had for the past year, so I drew faces and things a bit different.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JakeHowler In reply to Artoveli [2009-02-27 12:51:27 +0000 UTC]

Time-bubble. I like that!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artoveli In reply to JakeHowler [2009-02-27 12:58:08 +0000 UTC]

I had to put him in a time bubble, otherwise he'd have to look different in all my comics because there are such gaps between games.

Augh! No, no, no - you need to stop loosing bits of stories! Its - it's - ...almost like loosing a Book you know!

Very nice Cyans... it is true that the top right one is priceless. You don't see the dude fuming everyday...
Oh, yeah, I always wanted to ask Atrus if he was into alchemy or what. So in fact, he found this and picked it up on some Age I guess?... His on would have been interested in such a stone...

Yayz Cyan sketches! (how unexpected of me. I'm full of surprises...)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artoveli In reply to Faeliscity [2009-02-26 16:52:00 +0000 UTC]

I might have to rewrite it if enough people show interest in it, though I'll have to think of an ending in that case.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Faeliscity In reply to Artoveli [2009-02-27 13:30:02 +0000 UTC]

Ah - that can be a problem...
(he he - I remember that while writing my Saavy fic, at some point, I had devised Saavy's plan but not the way it could fail. For a while I panicked a little, believing that the plan was actually flawless and the fic was done for. )

Well, I don't know how much interest people have shown until now, but the only Cyan fanfic we have yet seems to have attracted some readers...

Artoveli In reply to Faeliscity [2009-02-27 14:25:08 +0000 UTC]

I remember when I was reading your "Whacked" story, thinking "Oh man, Saavedro's really got things worked out! How will Cy-- I mean, The Stranger ever get out of this one?" Good work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Faeliscity In reply to Artoveli [2009-02-27 14:46:33 +0000 UTC]

lol - thanks! It was fun to write...
Thinking back, and because of your comments, it always amuses me to imagine Cyan in this Stranger's place... he sometimes behaves in a rather un-Cyan-ish way, though...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Artoveli In reply to Faeliscity [2009-02-27 16:36:47 +0000 UTC]

It's natural for me to always insert Cyan in any story about the Stranger, though I have to agree about his personality there.

I find it kind of interesting that everyone has a pretty clear idea of his personality even though I've never written any stories about him!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Faeliscity In reply to Artoveli [2009-03-03 15:11:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, I guess that although you said you drew him as kind of a "default" character, he is everything but bland. His face and postures and expression do convey a definite personality, don't you think?
