Description

Watercolor on 140lbs CP paper. Original size 12×9″

On some weekend, at low tide someone comes down to the sea front in Penzance and builds a series of stone stacks. They are very delicately balanced and sometimes seems as they defy the laws of physics…when the tide comes in all of them fall down…till he comes again on and re-erects them in a new arrangement.
Not only are they captivating to look at, but they got me thinking about stability and transience, and the balance between them when building stone stacks and also in life in general.
This painting is what emerged from this experience – my own view of the balance between freedom and stability..

Wow.  I can see your hand in this, but it's a very different style than most of your other work.  They colors are much more smooth yet more controlled, everything is much more tightly representative.  I like both styles equally.  I'm just noting it because I always find it most impressive when an artist uses multiple styles.  And the visual concept is just awesome.  Very inspiring!

Thanks Malaika! In this painting I used a lot of glazes, waiting for each layer to dry  before applying the next one. Usually I paint more in the wet-in-wet technique.
I had a very clear vision of how I wanted it to look hence the more controlled technique. This is actually the first of my recent exercises that I felt comfortable painting, in the previous ones I felt like I'm painting using my left hand, after the long break. So, I'm pleased I ended up with something that I consider successful. In general I would like to combine controlled and spontaneous methods side by side in the same painting, but the scale of this one didnt allow for too much variety.
