Jeff idly tapped his mic. Wasn’t on. Of course, given it wasn’t their turn yet. He glanced towards his friends, Liam was tuning his guitar, and Rob was tapping away on his drums with one of his drumsticks. Tim on the other hand was just on his phone, keyboard sitting by his side. Seemed like they were all mostly ready, just had to wait their turn. The four of them made up Lousey Trousers, the rock band they’ve been trying to get off the ground. Don’t ask about the name, Liam thought they should rhyme and it basically came from randomly mentioning words. They wound up having this whole thing going with the custom trousers they made, which were apparently meant to make them look iconic when they got big. But that wasn’t happening for a while, though hopefully sooner rather than later. They’d somehow managed to book a concert at a music festival, so this was basically their big break. The trick was just how to stand out from all the other singers and bands here. Jeff had dyed his hair red to help, considering he was their lead singer after all, but who knows if they’d even get anything from this gig?

Whatever the case, it was almost their time up on stage, there was just one band to get through first. “You ever heard of these guys?” Jeff pondered out loud, watching them from the backstage as they and a small crew quickly set things up. Tim was the first to speak, still looking at his phone, “Nah, seem relatively unknown. Weird name too, who thinks of ‘Heartstarters? Some weird play on Fire Starter?” “We’re not ones to talk,” Rob interjected, “since we literally have Lousy in our name.” He gave a judging look to Liam, who quickly appeared defensive. “Hey, they're using a rhyming scheme too! I’m telling you, the name’s gotta roll of the tongue! I don’t get it either, but they got that part right! Like, seriously, what do you see, Jeff? They look like the boy band type? Are they trying to be some kinda Heartthrobs?” He asked. Jeff paused before answering, “I guess… they’re wearing matching outfits, and atleast seem like the handsome types.” As he watched them from the side, the dark-haired lead singer turned his gaze towards Jeff’s, and flashed a wink and a smile his way. What the hell? Was this dude flirting with him?

Another of them, the bass player, played a string, which seemed to signal that they were about to start. “Hmph, guess we might as well watch to see what the competition’s about.” Rob huffed, before standing up, Liam and Tim following suit. Their song was called ‘Love is a charm’ which… yeah, certainly not beating the boy band allegations. Atleast they seemed like an actual band, and not just a row of singers. The first note sung was an oddly soothing “Mmm” from the lead, which in a complete shock, almost sent a chill down Jeff’s spine. What was that? He didn’t sound impressive or anything, why did he feel like he had goosebumps?

As the song started, Jeff rolled his eyes. Seemed like a poppy tune, as expected. With a lot of moving around and lyrics about how much “he wants you” or whatever, with an emphasis on how this “you” was going to “be his” by the end. The dance moves were atleast nice, if a bit unoriginal. It kept your attention on the show. The song approached the bridge, and something about the performance was getting a bit… sensual. Slowing down a tad, while the movement leaned into a bit of an emotional suggestiveness. Gripping his chest, and he had this look in his eyes gazing into the audience, Jeff actually got another chill seeing that. The chorus started, and the song exploded back into the classic energy you’d expect from the pop song. Though something about it just sent a rush through Jeff. Wow, this song actually got your blood kinda pumping? He was also beginning to hear cheers from the crowd, where there hadn’t seem to actually be any before. Funny, it sounded a lot like feminine voices in those cheers, but he could swear most festival goers were male. Maybe they really are popular enough to draw a crowd of their own fans?

Jeff brushed a hair aside as he began tapping his foot, he was actually getting in the groove of this. He was actually too occupied to notice that the hair he’d brushed aside a second ago looked more pink than red now. “Huh, they’re kinda good.” Liam said behind him, a subtle pitch higher than he usually spoke. Yeah, he was right, it was actually good. Jeff’s heart was pumping just seeing them in action, and the audience seemed too, as some of them had gotten close enough to the stage to reach their hands up like fans usually do. The singer took a moment to approach and lightly touch them during a verse, and the cheers only seemed to grow louder in that moment. They were heading into the second chorus, the singer ran his hands through his hair in a move that somehow oozed charm and style, and the crowd went wild. “Eeeeee!” Jeff actually heard one particular shriek whimper out from behind him. The guys all turned to look, seeing Lana blush in embarrassment. “Ehe, sorry guys, got a bit excited…” They rolled their eyes, though Jeff felt like he also heard Rob giggle in response to that display. Either way, gotta keep watching, wouldn’t wanna miss the end of the song.

They were building up to the final chorus, and the lead was being extra flirty. Jeff twirled some of his hair as he watched him go, the wind machine from the stage also giving him a bit of a chill under his skirt. Things seemed to stop for a moment, obviously for the final chorus buildup, but when that happened, the singer took a second to once more glance to the gang at the side. And he smiled and winked. Jessie felt the blood rush through to her cheeks, heart pumping like a jackhammer. Oh, he was good. The crowd went wild as the Heartstarters sung through the final part of their song, but Jessie was almost too preoccupied thinking back to that moment. Ugh, don’t let him get to your head, focus on your own performance later. The girls needed to do good here if they wanted to get anywhere as a band.

The song finally ended, and the crowd erupted into applause, cheers and shrieks. The girls also clapped of course, enjoying the performance themselves. Lana even hollered. Yeah these guys would be her type, wouldn’t they? Instead of doing an encore, they humbly left the stage in the direction where the girls were watching. Oh gosh, they were coming here. Act cool Jessie!

“Hey.” The lead singer said, stopping in front of Jessie. Wow, he’s pretty tall up close… “H-Hey, you guys had a good performance.” Jessie replied, offering her praise. “Thanks,” He answered back, “Name’s Adam. I’m looking forward to seeing you in action myself. The name is…?”

“Jessie! Oh er, the band’s called ‘Purdy Skirts’, you know like ‘Pretty’. I know it’s a bit silly, Lana insisted we find some random words that rhyme and we thought it’d fit our ‘girly pop’ motif, and then we ended up making these custom skirts for the brand and- it was a whole thing, sorry I’m talking too much.” She blushed, brushing another lock of her dyed-pink hair aside. Hm, it really did look good with her outfit. “Well I’m looking forward to it, and maybe afterwards…?” He suggested, giving a hint that Jessie picked up on. “O-Oh you mean…? Yeah sure, I don’t mind!”

“Great, I’ll catch you later.” He said as he left, to which Jessie just flirtily waved with her fingers. Wow, she couldn’t believe she did that. Apparently the music industry really does help you hook up with attractive people, not that she complained! “Ooooh, looks like someone’s got a date~” Rachel teased. “Oh quit it.” Jessie hit back. “Hey, there’s no shame in getting with a cute guy like that!” Lana interjected. “Just uhh, while you’re at it, do me a favor and see if you can get that bassist’s number too when you see him. If he somehow doesn’t already have a girlfriend, I mean.” Jessie sighed, “You too, Lana. Come on, we need to hurry up on stage, no time wasting thinking about boys. Tina, come on and put down your phone already, you’ve taken enough selfies!” “Heyyy, you know how hard I worked on my makeup this morning. My followers need to see how-” “Look just come on, we’re probably behind schedule enough as is.” Jessie insisted, dragging Tina with the girls. They were not missing this chance!

They worked quick at setting their instruments up. This was it, time for the potential start of a long career, silly names and charming guys won’t keep them down! Especially the latter! Hell, Jessie’s just gonna make extra sure to charm him back during their performance. She’s got this! “Alright, we’re ‘Purdy Skirts’, and this is our song, ‘Girl’s Best Friend’!”

Okay okay, in all seriousness, this only took an evening to do, and it's an idea I've had in mind for a long time. And once you start, you gotta finish it so you're not tempted to continue it later when you're trying to study! Also this rounds out my deviations to a nice 30, which is always cool.

All in all not totally sure how to feel about this one. Came about how I expected, but also don't think I fully pulled it off. Also had trouble working the colors which I should have seen coming having four band members to keep track of and use colors that don't hurt your eyes. I actually already see one color mistake and a few writing/grammar ones, I definitely rushed this one out a bit.

One thing I have to say though, very proud of the title. Was undecided until the moment I had to type it and it just came out, it's perfect.

Probably my favourite artist to use, just weird when you inevitably keep using the same girls in the captions. But hey, I needed to find something that fit my idea and this person makes quality whether you like it or not.
