This is a good shot, as you well know. I like the contrast in color, but even more than that I like the texture of the buildings closest to the camera. When I look at this I get a feeling of confinement - my greatest fear. It is truly amazing how people are willing to live, so close, so caged. But some people live for that I guess. (shrug)

I like the shot, and with me it resonates on a deeper level. Cheers.

Before I forget, a minor little thing - I absolutely love your little siggy in the bottom of the frame there - a nice touch

This is a very interesting capture though, perfect for black & white as you've discovered. That really seems to pop the texture of the brick, and the pattern in peticular. I love the alternating light and dark brick of the different buildings too. Excellent job

as others have said it is the rythm, repitition and pattern like qualities of this that make it a feast for the eye. I love how the crop mans I have no real idea how tall these buildings are or how far the stretc outwards. It's great, well done!

Do you remember where this was? It's not Prinsengracht that you love so much, I think. It's a familiar image to me. The absence of color makes it a bit strange. But it captures the rhythm of the old Amsterdam canal streets. These houses have seen people walk by for about 3 or 4 centuries.

aspirit In reply to jvdgoor [2006-02-18 03:50:36 +0000 UTC]

It was west of Leidseplein somewhere... if I had a map in front of me I could probably figure it out, but I'm feeling too lazy to go hunting through my stuff right now

It was a very clean part of the city, I must say. I also thought it seemed a bit newer than the central canals. I was struck by how pristine the facades were, and from memory the bricks were warm colours.

Prinsengracht is definitely my favourite though
