Description Last time when i made some shurikens was over five years ago [link] and it was a quite nice job to make last week this darkened set of traditional 18 cm long bo-shurikens and senban-shurikens for one Finnish martial arts dojo. (Spikes are forged from slices of old 8 mm thick leaf spring and those senbans are made from 3 mm thick steel plate and huge square washers just like in the feudal Japan.)

I made also some shiny throwing spikes for my own collection, because my old bo-shurikens are quite lightweighted and i want to use also some good and sturdy "heavy duty spikes" for the longer throws. (Small round spikes are made from 12 mm thick coil spring and they are 20 cm long. Square throwers are forged from old railroadspikes and those huge 27-30 cm long spikes are kind like my own versions of "Cold Steel Torpedo" throwing weapon. Big round spikes are forged from 20 mm thick steel axle and my biggest spike is forged from old hexagonal stone drilling rod and it weights about 450 g.)

Would you mind telling me how you make them? I'd love to know so I can do it.

millasen lämpökäsittelyn noille oot antanu? vai ootko lainkaa?

Senbanit on leikattu/hiottu tavallisestä teräslevystä & nelioprikoista, joten niille en ole tehnyt muuta kuin tervapolttokäsittelyn. Kaikki puikkomaiset on kuitenkin taottu auton lehtijousista, kiviporista ja muista vastaavista karkenevista teräslaaduista, joten niissä on ainakin jonkinasteinen karkaisu. (Kastoin tummanpunaisena öljyyn.)

Erityisen kovaksi ei kuitenkaan kannata ikinä mitään heittovehkeitä laittaa, koska sillonhan ne vaan hajoaisi herkemmin osuessaan vaikka vahingossa toisiinsa maalitaulussa.

It is your idea -Throwing needles- ?

Such weapon does not have analogues in history more?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Astalo In reply to Primogenitus [2009-12-16 22:49:29 +0000 UTC]

Typical "bo-shuriken" was very common throwing weapon in feudal Japan and they used to make that kind of throwing spikes from for example nails or big needles etc. [link]

Those shiny throwing spikes are just my own versions from "Cold Steel Torpedo" [link] I like them more than normal bo-shurikens, because they are much bigger and heavier objects and i can throw them from longer distances.

What did you quench the black spikes in?

When i want to darken or harden steel objects i usually heat them and drop objects into pine tar. (One local tourist resort make nice traditional tar and charcoal when people take some pine logs in there..)

Do you have any advice on how to mix pine tar?

Or do you simply buy it?

I don't never have to make own mixes, because they give usually free tar when i take some old resin impregnated logs in that tar making place.
They give some of that final product for me and sell the rest for tourists and make also some other tar products. (Soap, shampoos.. etc.)

excellent, now you need a ridiculously complicated belt/carrier for the spikes. Those look really practical, to bad a sheath might be a difficult to create.

Astalo In reply to GodofForge [2008-09-20 21:40:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.
Those square spikes and that hexagonal spike are so long, that maybe i have to make same kind of hard covered carrying case what they use for example in bow shooting.

I have also one wrist carrier idea for my 3 round shaped throwers, because they don't weight so much like my bigger spikes.

i think that quote came from a terrible american 70s tv series called kung fu, starring David Carradine, i always use it when discussing ninja tactics.

Thanks. Very simple aerodynamic shapes are always the best for throwing purpose.
