Gathering up the notes and slipping them in one of the books stacked on the table, I stood up and let Pri wrap her arms around me, giving her fluffy hair a light rub. "Yeah! She gave me a looooooong talk about kitsune magic and stuff, then gave me this cube to look at! I didn't know what she wanted me to do at first, but then I tried imagining what I felt when making that fire yesterday, and pushed some of that feeling into the box… and it just opened!"
"Ah…" Had I been like this as well, after my very first lesson with Mother, too? I only vaguely remembered the way Sis had been back then - more distant than how she typically had been with me, like there was a torrent of thoughts she was keeping to herself and herself alone… though now I had an idea of what those thoughts were. "She gave me that cube too. How long did it take for you to get it open?" "How long?" Pri paused for a moment, raising a hand to her chin. "Maaaaybe five minutes or so? Even Grandmother seemed surprised when I told her I'd gotten it open…"
"..." For a moment I didn't respond, just feeling an inexplicable… pang deep inside of me. Then, I smiled even wider, and ruffled Pri's hair some more. "That's amazing!" "Yeah!" Pri suddenly yawned, rubbing her eyes with one hand. "I feel so worn out though…" "That's the price we pay for using our magic… but I'm sure you'll get used to it!" "I think I'm just going to take a nap then, good luck with your work Aunt Ria!" As I heard her footsteps fade away I let out a soft sigh, and sat down at the table.

Yeah, maybe I could redouble and triple my efforts in solving the code to Mother's notes, doing whatever I could to uncover the secrets they held. But maybe it would also be better for everyone if I just forgot about the matter, and we went on with our lives as normal. Maybe it was the most natural thing in the world that Mother would choose to train Pri over me, considering she was so much stronger… and maybe if I gave Pri a look at the code, not thinking that she had to be protected somehow from whatever they hold, she would just puzzle her way straight through them like she'd blown her way through that cube-
"........" A thought struck my mind like a bolt of thunder. My heart suddenly starting to pound like mad, I pulled Mother's notes back out and let my gaze wander over them like it had the cube. And just like that… there it was, clear as day. I tugged on the intricate yet invisible knot I saw covering Mother's code like a cage and it unraveled, the ink on the page swirling and warping before my very eyes. Experiment… Imbuement… I could only make out individual words at first, then phrases and sentences…. And when the entire thing was revealed before me, I didn't say a word. Couldn't. Was this what had been going on, all along…?
I stood up, the notes grasped in one hand with no care to the fact that they were crumpled, and rushed out of the library.
