As I unlocked the door of my trailer, I could smell that something had gone off, giving the whole place a faint, sort of sour odor. "Hah…" I sighed softly to myself as I saw the plates I had left in the sink, intending to wash them after I got home from my trip in the park - but of course, that hadn't happened. But the leftover scraps of food hadn't even gotten that bad…. Again, the reminder that everything that had happened occurred only over a couple of days made it seem even more like a dream. And now I had woken up from that dream, finding myself alone once again in harsh, cold reality.
Trying my best not to breath through my nose, I cleaned out the dishes and put them on the rack above the sink, letting the water slowly drip down and out. I refilled the generator outside with gasoline, scrubbed the trailer clean inside and out, washed my clothes and hung them outside to dry. Then… what? Finding no more chores left to do, I sat down on my bed and stared out the small window into the night sky. The sky was clear and I could see the moon once again, a pale crescent standing out amongst the glimmering stars surrounding it.
I looked at my watch - 03:57. Normally I would have been long asleep at this point, but now I didn't even feel a single ounce of fatigue. Everything was so quiet - just the faint hum of my old fridge, and the soft sounds of the wind outside. There was a part of me that almost wanted to cry, but for the most part I just felt… numb. So instead I just lay on my bed, pulled the thin covers up to my chin, and stared up at the ceiling, waiting for the hours to tick away and for the sun to peek over the horizon.
Needless to say, I didn't get any sleep that night. And when the sun rose the next morning, and my battered alarm began ringing to needlessly tell me to wake up, I reluctantly dragged myself out of bed, put on my ratty uniform, and headed off to school. It seemed that at least Celeste had had the presence of mind to return the memories of everyone back to normal, and no one seemed surprised that it was now the old me entering the classroom instead of a girl with orange hair… not that it seemed they really noticed me at all. So in short, everything was back to the way it had been.
The day seemed to pass by really slowly, the minutes ticking by at a torturous pace and the clock's rotations seeming as if it had been submerged in molasses. "Zzzz…." It was too easy to just drift off, my head lying against one hand as my eyes blinked repeatedly, then found it hard to stay open, then closed altogether.
So you're back to yourself? How curious. Huh? For a moment, I could swear I saw a flash of orange against the blackness of my eyelids - was it just a daydream? A hallucination? Or somehow… actually happening?
