“Alright, I’m here. You ready to warm up?” Holly calls, walking into the warm-up arena, heading towards the center, standing next to a jump.
“Yeah,” I call back. The arena was practically empty, only one other horse trotting around. Winterfell and I walk lazily around the arena, me not even bothering to try to make him go yet. Pushing him forward is not exactly my favorite thing in the world. In fact, I dread it.
“Okay. Go ahead and start making him walk up.” Holly says, resting her hand on one of the jumps in the center of the warm-up arena, her gaze on me expectantly.
I kick his side as hard as I can, and he barely responds. I kick again, and the big horse starts begrudgingly moving at a better pace. Not fast by any means, but an improvement nonetheless.
”Good. Now let him trot!” Holly calls to me. I kick him, and he does nothing. “C’mon! Kick, kick!”
I kick him harder, trying my best to get him to move up. Eventually, he trots, very slowly. I kick him again, trying to get him to move.
I can hear Holly sigh. I can feel the nerves bubble in my stomach, hoping she wasn’t disappointed in me.
”Kenna, walk over here for a second,” Holly instructs, and I immediately comply, bringing Winterfell down to a walk and moving him towards her.
Once we reached her, she walked up to my side, petting Winterfell’s neck.
”I’m going to give you this crop. When he doesn’t listen to your leg, give him a tap behind your leg. Okay?” She asks, holding the crop out to me. I grab it and nod to her. “Thank you,” I say, guiding Winterfell back to our place on the rail.
”Okay, you can let him trot now,” Holly says, and in response I kick him up into the trot, him complying on my first try, perhaps aware of the crop I now possess.
He trots very slowly though, dragging his feet. I kick him again, and he doesn’t make a move to go faster, so I hit him below my leg. He immediately moves up, trotting nicely.
”Good, I like that pace. Make sure to stretch your heels down. Stretch tall, stay up. Remember, this is equitation!” Holly says to me. I stretch my heels down, keeping them glued to his side in support. I push my shoulders back, trying to stay balanced. It was a lot of things to manage at once.
”Good! Now do sitting trot,” Holly calls. I sit down in the saddle, keeping my eye up and hands steady on the reins. Winterfell brings his head in further, but it feels a bit too tight, so I lift my hands a bit. “Good, Mckenna. Let him walk,” Holly says to us.
I pull him down to the walk, him getting a bit heavy. “Okay. When you’re ready, let him canter.”
I shorten my reins and ask him to canter, him trotting for a few steps before picking it up.
”Good, Kenna. Push him forward a bit more.”
I squeeze with my leg, and Winterfell lengthens his big, bouncy stride. We canter around a bit, then I bring him back down to the walk.
”You both look good! Lets walk towards the arena,” Holly says, walking out of the warm-up ring with me trailing close behind her.
”Make sure to stay on the quarter line, find your own space,” Holly says, while wiping down my boots.
”Okay, thank you,” I say, watching the last over-fences round go. The last horse exits the arena, and I’m called in for my flat.
”Good luck out there kid,” she says, and I walk into the ring.
