November 29th
I could hear the sound of the fireflies I had caught buzzing around in my jar, the light they emitted casting a yellow glow onto both Oka and I. It was a dreadfully quiet fall night, the light breeze blowing my hair softly through the air.
We were walking through the middle of a mountain range, hopefully nearing Tra Tau soon. I haven’t had anything to eat in over a day, and there hasn't been much grass for Oka to munch on in awhile either. Sweet, sweet Oka. He hasn’t complained once about this journey, he’s done everything I’ve asked him. I truly don’t deserve a horse like him.
At that thought, I rub my hand up and down his neck, and he snorts lightly in response.
We keep walking for who knows how long, no directions or road markers in sight. Though, if they’re there, I’m sure it’d be easier to see them if it were lighter outside. Fireflies don’t do much to help with sight, not by a long-shot. Oh how I wish I’d packed a candle of sorts.
Eventually, we round a corner around a huge mountain, and right in front of me lies a stone bridge. It’s railings are way past useful, and it’s so high up that I can’t see the bottom of the cavern. Great. I just love heights.
I turn to look at Oka. Were we ready for this? Is this even safe? Certainly not. What idiot came up with this? I just want a break.
I close my eyes, taking deep breaths, trying to calm myself. It’ll be fine, right? Oka is a good boy. He’ll probably walk right across the thing.
I take one step forward, and Oka follows by my side like he always does. His hooves stomped on the stone as he walked forward bravely.
If he could do it, so could I.
Don’t look down.
I force one foot to go in front of the other, trying to slow my rapidly beating heart. This is a very thin bridge. I slowly inched into poor Oka’s space, and of course, he didn’t mind. He held his head lower than usual, sniffing the stone as he walked. But he never wavered.
Just keep going, I tell myself.
Eventually, we made it to the other side and we walked forward onto the dirt. Thank goodness.
We actually did it! I kept my head up and walked forward. If we could do that, we’ll be fine to finish this fateful journey.
I continued walking on our trek towards Tra Tau and not once did I look back.
